Story Behind the Title Salty Aftertaste

“What’s your book called?”

“Salty Aftertaste.”

“Oh, ha-ha. That’s funny.”

That was the normal reaction I received when my first book Salty Aftertaste came out, and it’s still the same reaction I receive today. People giggle when they hear the title or blush, and I have gotten a few “that sounds interesting,” followed by them trying to change the subject.

I can’t take credit for Salty Aftertaste’s title. A friend of mine came up with it while we were trying to brainstorm titles. I had 80% of the book done at the time, and he read the actual three blog posts (4 Gay Guys, 3 Straight Girls & a Beach House), which the book is based on. The choice was between four titles: Sandy Cracks (I used this later for a chapter title), Tan Lines, Beach Buns, and of course, Salty Aftertaste.

My mom was actually the deciding factor in the title name. She never read the blog posts or even parts of the book, but she did know most of the stories from Kevin and me. When she picked Salty Aftertaste, I was somewhat shocked. The title described the beach, but it was also an obvious euphemism for a blow job!

When I asked why she picked that title, her response was, “It’s cute, beachy and an aftertaste can be good or bad. You had good and bad experiences on that vacation. I think it fits the best.”

When I decided to change the book cover for Salty Aftertaste’s 1-year anniversary, I had three mock-up covers to choose from and again my mom was the deciding factor in the cover change. All she saw was the artwork. There was no title or text of any kind, and it was just a very rough idea. She picked the cover with the two guys sitting on the beach. I made some necessary changes to the cover thanks to some suggestions from fans and friends. But one thing everyone said about the new cover was “Oh my God, it’s Jason and Kevin from the book!” It’s true what they say: “Mother knows best.”

A special thank you to Joyfully Jay for being the first to bring you this new cover! Salty Aftertaste’s Anniversary Edition with the new cover will be available everywhere September 23, 2014.

Thank you to my talented publicist, Joleen, from Parenthetical Author Services (PAS). She set up my entire cover reveal/anniversary blog tour. You can email her at PAS Promotions.

This is one of my favorite scenes from Salty Aftertaste. It clearly shows the type of mischief Kevin can get himself into. Curiosity may have killed the cat, but this monkey always gets the banana.

Kevin awoke full of energy and ready to start the day. He always has so much energy first thing in the morning. He is like a hairy horny jackrabbit ready for action. My eyes had just barely opened, and he was already out of bed and in the hallway. He ran back into our room and was standing over me.

“What on earth are you doing?” I asked as I looked up at him. The harsh light of our yellow room made me squint my eyes at him.

“Um, I think that guy that Bobby brought over last night is still here.” Kevin ran out of the room and into the hallway again.

I sat up in the bed and rubbed my eyes. Kevin walked back into our room and stood by the side of the bed.

“Yep, I definitely think he’s in there. Bobby’s such a whore,” Kevin said.

While yawning I asked, “How do you know?”

“I think I heard something.” Kevin disappeared again and was back in the hallway in front of Bobby’s bedroom door.

I crawled out of bed and looked into the hallway. Kevin was standing in front of the door with his ear pressed against the wood. He pointed at Bobby’s door and mouthed, “He is in there.”

I motioned for him to come back over to me. “Okay, Nancy Drew, that’s enough sleuthing for you,” I whispered and lightly smacked him on the butt.

Kevin ran back over to the door completely ignoring my order. His curiosity out ruled any rational thinking. Kevin knelt down and realized there was a keyhole under the doorknob.

While peeping through the keyhole, he said very loudly, “Oh my God it is a real keyhole!”

I could not contain the laughter that erupted from my mouth. “You thought it was fake?” I asked.

“I can see in the room,” Kevin said excitedly and again very loudly. He kicked his back legs up in a giddy frenzy.

“Honey, you’re not supposed to announce that you’re looking through a keyhole, that’s the whole idea,” I said still laughing at him. “You’d make a horrible spy.”

Kevin looked at me and smiled, “Oopsie whoopsies.”

I grabbed Kevin by the arm and yanked him away from Bobby’s door.

“Bobby is going to kill you,” I said as I led him out into the kitchen.

After about ten minutes, we heard Bobby’s door open and saw Bobby and Tommy emerge. Bobby’s face looked smitten, and he blushed when he saw us looking. Bobby followed Tommy down the stairs and out the door.

“Talk about a walk of shame,” Kevin said while shaking his head.

Bobby appeared in the doorway of the kitchen as Kevin and I were talking about him. I did not know how long he was standing there or what exactly he heard. He glared at Kevin. It was Bobby’s way of saying, “You’re an asshole!”

Blurb

Salty Aftertaste

Boys, beaches and bad decisions…

In this nonfiction tale, Jason and his hilarious and crude motley cast of friends leave their mundane suburban jungles and flock to the mecca that is Rehoboth Beach, Delaware for vacation. They are in search of a little rest and relaxation; aka beach, bars and boys, lots of hot boys.

Jason is just looking for a little attention. He just wants to feel wanted, and a little summer passion would not hurt either. Jason is the self-proclaimed hopeless romantic of the group. Will he find his summer love or is romance really scarce?

Kevin is the complete opposite of Jason. He feels that romance is only alive in stories. Kevin’s love for a teenage drama goes too far, and his obsession turns into more than he expected. Did Kevin finally stumble upon some romance or does his fascination finally get the better of him?

Bobby is looking for a connection. Any kind of connection. He meets a new guy every night and shares his bed with him. What is really going on behind Bobby’s bedroom door? Will he ever be able to fill this insatiable void for closeness?

Benjamin sneaks out every night. He disappears into the night and reemerges the next morning as if nothing had happened. He is quiet about his extracurricular activities. Where does Benjamin go? What is he doing?

In this beach oasis, where there is an endless sea of sexy men with perfect bodies, will Jason and his friends actually find love or just one night stands? One thing is for certain, it is an epic vacation that none of them will forget.
