Characters with Multiple Kinks

So Manties in a Twist isn’t really about women’s underwear. Wearing lingerie and dresses is just one of many kinks Kamen explores in a story that’s ultimately about growing up, dealing with grief, and…defeating the Subs Club’s archnemesis, Cinnamon, in PetPlayFest.

MiaT also isn’t really about pony play, though Kamen’s quest to defeat Cinnamon makes up a decent chunk of the book’s plot. So why two very different kinks in this book, when the other Subs Club members typically have one “thing” that does it for them?

All of the Subs Club books are intended to be kind of post-kinky. The kink is important to each character, but it’s never the point of the story. Dave and Gould each seek kinks that are woven into their every day lives, while Miles and Kamen tend to keep scenes and daily life separate. But I wanted each character to have activities that fit their personalities, and what seemed to fit Kamen best was…a hodgepodge.

BDSM romance sometimes has a tendency to portray kink as being less fluid than it often is in reality. I don’t adhere strictly to one role or one activity, and neither do most of my kinky friends. It made sense to me that Kamen, as the most I’ll-try-anything-once member of the Subs Club, would be constantly discovering new things he likes. (And doesn’t like. J). Kamen’s overall “thing” seems to be a passion for inhabiting characters—whether it’s a 1930s starlet, a loyal soldier, or a massive stallion, he makes up for being kind of a homebody by going on adventures right there in the bedroom.

And that’s ultimately what’s so fun about writing Kamen. No, he’s not incredibly bright. No, submitting is not a Super Serious part of his identity. But he loves being alive, and his role-playing reflects how much he likes to have fun, and to draw others into his strange little worlds.

Look, I’ll never stop missing Hal, but this Subs Club my friends started to review suck-ass doms isn’t gonna bring him back or give him justice. For me, it’s just another chance to hang out with my friends, even if they think I’m too dumb to understand the important work we’re supposedly doing.

But maybe I’m not as dumb as they think—at least I know when I’ve got a good thing going. Which is why I just moved in with my dom. Ryan’s awesome possum. He’s really short, never makes me feel stupid, and is up for anything. One word: costumes. Two more words: women’s underwear. We’re all about the lace, no leather.

Except when we do pony play. We first tried it as a joke, but turns out I’m ballin’ at it. Now PetPlayFest is coming up, and I wanna take down the Subs Club’s archrival, Cinnamon the ponygirl, in the horse show.

My friends think I’m spending too much time with Ryan and ignoring my obligations to the group. But since when is friendship an obligation? Ryan’s my first serious relationship, and I want to take it . . . seriously. At some point I need to think about my future, not my past.
