The Processing Center

J’nah looked over at his sleeping Sachari. He’d always thought that should he be lucky enough to find his match, that there would be a seamless transition from mated to unmated. His Sachari would be excited to be his. His Sachari would be insatiable for him, eager to rear young with young. He’d never imagined this, a mate traumatized from shock.

The room was filled with others there picking up Volunteers, but none were there for a Sachari. J’nah had been surprised when told to come to the auditorium. This was not how matching was usually done, but it had been explained that this Sachari was a special case. He was a Penal Volunteer, who had surprised them all by turning out to be a perfect match genetically and psychologically to J’nah. He’d accepted a commuted sentence in exchange for the possibility of becoming Sachari. He was being kept with the other Volunteers in case the match did not work out, in order to go ahead and process him for job assignment within the Penal Volunteer program.

His data pad chimed, letting him know that the next Volunteer was the one he’d been waiting for. A screen above the stage displayed information about his crime, his behavioral profile, and a list of his skills. The young human male was led out a door to stand upon the stage, the screen overhead now displaying his image. He was breathtaking. He was also terrified. J’nah’s expert eyes took in the rigid way the young male held himself, the jerky movements he made as he turned about, and the look of blind resignation in his eyes. J’nah moved closer to the stage, within scenting distance. His body responded even more strongly than it had when he’d opened the scent sample they’d sent him.

Anger flooded him at the undercurrent of terror he could also smell. Someone had frightened his mate. It niggled at his mind as he did not also scent the tell-tale sour taint, nor did the young man have a look of defiance, all things that usually accompanied guilt. He tapped his data pad, re-reading the charges that had led to the beautiful young man to where he was now, drunken sex with deception as to future intent. There was something else there to it, something more than what was in this report. He was positive of that, as otherwise, they wouldn’t have been a perfect psychological match as J’nah had no time for anyone without honor.

He swiped at his screen aware that two other men who stood close to the stage were also scrutinizing the young man and consulting their data pads. Secondary close matches or possible employers, he didn’t know, but they would go away empty-handed. He keyed in his acceptance of the match, his prints sealing his pledge. He put away his data pad and went to see the Penal Volunteer supervisor to arrange for his Sachari’s treatment and transport, vowing to discover the hidden truths he sensed lurking.

Shaking off the memories, J’nah reached over and pulled up the coverlet, tucking his sleeping Sachari in. Matthias will never know fear again, nor feel resigned to giving in to injustice, he vowed.

Bio

For placement in place of an author avatar
Leona is a longtime staunch supporter of human rights and environmental causes. Her favorite genre to read is M/M fiction and she particularly enjoys science fiction, fantasy, and action/suspense sub-genres—especially if they have a nice seasoning of romance. She has far too many books on her Kindle, has overloaded her phone with even more and, when not reading, writing, being driven to distraction by her children, or being overlorded by her three cats, can be found trying to locate the portal that the sock monster uses to steal socks from her dryer.

Recent head-reeling news for her included her novel Jared: Urban Wolves #1 being nominated for an Indie Award from Metamorph and placing as a finalist in the 2016 Rainbow Awards, earning an Honorable Mention. She’s still suspicious that it’s all been a dream, but as long as her readers are happy and she can find at least one of the missing socks, she’s happy.

You’ll find her books on Amazon, including on Kindle Unlimited. You’ll also find her on Facebook at Leona Windwalker, where you can keep up on news regarding current, new, and upcoming releases.
