It has been a crazy time for Dex Daley and his partner Sloane Brodie. Dex was kidnapped, tortured, and managed to escape, only to die and come back to life as part Therian. Dex’s father, Tony, was shot and is in the hospital. Dex and Sloane have accepted positions as TIN agents. And to top it off, the guys are now engaged. Dex and Sloane have barely wrapped their heads around everything that is going on, but now they need to figure out how to tell their family and their team everything that is happening and they know at least some of this news is going to be hard to handle. But despite all the changes they are going through, they guys are determined to show that they will all stick together, no matter what happens.

Thick & Thin is the eighth story in Charlie Cochet’s fabulous THIRDS series, and to me this is really a transition book in the series. So much happened in the previous book, Smoke & Mirrors, that this is kind of the time to catch our breath and reflect on everything that is going on. To me, that book was my favorite of the series so far, in part because it was just a mad dash of intensity from start to finish. So I think that this story works well here in that it gives us the opportunity to sort of see where we have been and understand what is happening going forward.

Most of this book is focused on Dex and Sloane talking to the people in their lives about all the shattering things that have happened recently. There is the good news of the guys’ engagement, and the less well received news that they are leaving the team to work for TIN. And the completely shocking news that Dex can now partially shift and has some other Therian abilities. We also get to learn more detail on how their new jobs will play out with TIN, as well as what is going to happen with the rest of the team going forward. I am excited to see how things are developing, and am impressed that this far into the series that Cochet is still taking things in interesting directions. There is also a side plot here with a small case the guys investigate, but it too ultimately focuses on the future directions these guys are heading and it seems it will play out largely in the next book.

So while I found this book does a nice job of catching us up and giving us a launching off point for future directions of the series, there isn’t a whole lot going on here in this story itself. It is fairly short, not quite 100 pages, and the book itself ended at about the 87% mark on my Kindle. After such an exciting previous book, as well as such an exciting series, this one is a little flat in comparison just because not much happens. Again, I know this book is doing a key job for the series, but it doesn’t have the intensity and drama of the other books. Still, if you are a fan of the THIRDS series, you aren’t going to want to miss this one because it really sets us up for where things are going in the future. I am dying for more (and yay, looks like Seb and Hudson are finally coming up!), so I am eagerly awaiting the next installment of this fabulous series.
