Jack Brighton and Lawson Gale have been together for six months, and everything is going great. Jack wants Lawson to move in, but Lawson is worried about going too fast. He thinks that they should both be really solid in the relationship before they take that next step. There’s no doubting their love, but Lawson is still being cautious.

When Jack suggests taking a trip together, Lawson is on board. And then he gets an offer to head north to Queensland to help figure out why a butterfly species is dying. Turning their vacation into a working trip is just fine with Jack, and the two set off. Things are rocky at first, with Lawson coming up with some suggestions about what is killing off the butterflies, but meeting resistance. Even still, Lawson is offered a permanent position at the conservatory to study the butterfly. When Jack possibly finds an answer to their demise, he and Lawson camp overnight in the rainforest to test it.

But the night does not go according to plan, and due to a series of unfortunate events, Lawson winds up in the hospital fighting for his life. Jack has never been so scared in his life, and it reaffirms everything he’s feeling for Lawson. Lawson also realizes exactly what he wants. And if they can just take that step, they will truly have their happily ever after.

I really enjoyed Imago, so I couldn’t wait to pick up this sequel featuring the next step in the journey for Jack and Lawson. And I certainly wasn’t disappointed. Jack and Lawson are deeply in love, and working their way through entwining their lives. I loved that this book was easy, but at the same time, so believable. The obstacles the men faced were the kinds that any couple in love would have to as they are finding their permanence.

In particular, I loved the consistency of character. Both Jack and Lawson were the same people we got to know and love in the first book, even if they’ve both grown into themselves a little more. The first book ended with a very solid HFN, but this one is all about the HEA, and I adored the ending of this book so much. A little sappy, perhaps, but that wasn’t a bad thing at all and fit these characters perfectly.

I liked the way Walker set up a catalyst for them to finally be ready to take the next step. Okay, Jack was ready, but Lawson needed a few more facts before he felt like it wasn’t too soon. It came early on, and I loved that it wasn’t this big drawn out thing, that it happened, they recovered, and moved on. I’m always a little worried when I pick up a second book about the same MCs, fearing that the author will tear them apart in one way or another, in order to put them to rights again. And no one wants to see that with a couple they’ve seen fall in love. That’s not the case here, and I very much appreciated that. Needing a push to be ready to take the next step is another thing all together, and Walker worked her magic here with Jack and Lawson.

All in all, this was a really great second book, and this one really ends in a beautiful way. There was no doubt after the first one that Jack and Lawson would be together forever, but now we really got to see it. If you’ve read Imago, then don’t hesitate to pick this one up. And if you haven’t, start there, and then get this book to watch Jack and Lawson get everything they’ve ever wanted.
