new adult

New Adult. One of my favorite romance genres. I love the mix of YA tone and style of writing with slightly more adult themes. Read: more sexy.

New Adults are characters that are out on their own, at the start of forging their own life. An exciting time. A sexy, fun time.

It makes for awesome reading.

Here are some wonderful NA romances that I’ve read in the last year. Most are male/male romances with a couple of excellent male/female ones thrown in there.

Untitled2

Abroad, by Liz Jacobs

This book came out earlier this year and what a pleasure it was. The writing is punchy and the romance was of the sweet, slow-burning kind that I really dig.

An excellent debut by Liz Jacobs, this book features a strong, diverse cast and explores themes of culture and finding oneself.

Untitled11

Arrows Through Archer, by Nash Summers

Here’s an author to put on your must-read list. Nash Summers knows her craft, and in Arrows Through Archer she delivers a stunning December-May romance.

This is writing at its best, subtle and understated in the most powerful ways. The rural Canadian setting combined with heart-fluttering emotion made this a staggering read. I loved every moment of it.

Untitled10

Peter Darling, by Austin Chant

A Peter Pan inspired story featuring Pan all grown up. He’s back in Neverland and learning a lot about himself and those pesky pirates he thought he hated.

This is an incredibly touching enemies-to-lovers story with a tender romance that grew and grew on me until I was swept away.

Untitled9

Crossing Swords, by Mixie Edwards

Such a fun, ridiculously (awesomely) over-the-top sexy read.

I’m not usually one for a lot of sex on page because I find it weakens the romantic tension, but Mixie Edwards proved to me that copious amounts of on-page sex can be done well and stocked with tension!

I loved the denial in this one. Loved watching these immature guys slowly evolve and realize that maybe, just maybe all this sex they are having with each other means they are a tiny, little bit gay after all?

An addictive read with snappy narration.

Untitled3

The Understatement of the Year, by Sarina Bowen

An MM hockey romance by an incredibly talented author. This is a seriously smooth story that was in my top five reads for 2016. It has a solid plot, solid romance, solid sexiness—oh my!

And then, just to make it that much more perfect, it had a good dollop of emotion, too.

I read it in one sitting and have marked it as Must Re-read!

Seguing nicely onto my next rec…

Untitled4

HIM, by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy.

More hockey. More amazing writing. This was one sexy, sexy story delivered in tasty little morsels that give the first half of the book a slow-burn feeling and then, wowzers, the sexy times are off the freaking charts! A wonderful friends-to-lovers story that I also look forward to re-reading.

Untitled8

The Mating of Michael, by Eli Easton

This is one I read a couple of years ago and re-read again a few months ago. Eli Easton is one of my favorite authors in the MM genre. Here is a storyteller who has a knack for writing fun, emotional, sexy and touching romances. My first by her was the wonderful YA Superhero and she’s been on my auto-buy list ever since.

There are too many of her books to recommend them all here, but standouts for me are the aforementioned Superhero, Blame It on the Mistletoe, and The Mating of Michael.

The main characters Michael and James stole my heart. Michael was so loving and generous and James had this blunt geeky wit that I loved. Swoon, swoon, swoonworthy!

Untitled7

Junkie, by Cambria Herbert

If you can handle a cliffhanger, then give Junkie a test drive. A warm, slow-burning romance that really had me on the edge of my seat. I also loved Drew’s obsession with cars and racing. I loved the setting of this one and totally rooted for Drew and Trent in this friends-to-lovers romance.

Untitled5

The Wall of Winnipeg and Me, by Mariana Zapata

This is an MF romance, and oh my, oh my is it a wonderful, frustrating, awesome slow burn.

Mariana Zapata is—hands down—the queen of slow burn and boy does she deliver in this fake-engagement trope romance! Quirky, down-to-earth girl meets a seemingly assholey football player and we watch as the sparks ignite between them! Yikes. This was my first book by Mariana and it sold me on all her others past and future.

Untitled6

Dear Aaron, by the queen of slow burn, Mariana Zapata

Epistolary romance for the first half of the novel, where Ruby and Aaron connect via emails and letters. It’s through their correspondence that their initial attraction develops. The second half of the story brings them physically together and shows us their growing romantic interest in a deliciously slow-burning way. Totally wanted to keep this book under my pillow!

Blurb

ScorpioHatesVirgo-fThis year is all about healing the heart, Scorpio. It’s time to leave negative attitudes and stoic facades at the door and let others see the real, more vulnerable you.

Percy Freedman is not grieving. Absolutely not, take that back at once. No, he’s entirely sure that selling his dead aunt’s home and leaving the neighbors he’s known for years is the sane thing to do. Who in their right mind would keep the house that smells like all the hugs he’ll never have again?

Nobody, that’s who.

Well, except his cul-de-sac neighbors. They all seem to think some paint and new furniture will clean the emotional slate. They all want him to stay.

Even his old nemesis, Callaghan Glover.

Especially his old nemesis, Callaghan Glover.

Lured into a game of Sherlock Gnomes, Percy finds himself hanging out with his neighbors more than might be considered healthy. Along with juggling new and surprising verbal grenades from Cal, and his burgeoning friendship with Gnomber9, Percy is starting to wonder if selling might have been the grief talking after all . . .

That’s right, Scorpio. With a little patience, heartbreak might be a thing of the past . . .

“Scorpio Hates Virgo” contains sarcasm, sexual content, a slightly sappy HEA, and an unhealthy obsession with dinosaurs.
It can be read as a standalone.

Themes: Light-hearted, friends-to-lovers, slow burn
Genre: New Adult, light-hearted contemporary gay romance
