Length: Short Story

Bru Baker sends up a lovely Christmas offering in her holiday release, Homemade from the Heart. With all kinds of incorrect assumptions and lots of quiet lusting, Grant and Josh are destined to become one of the sweetest couples of the year.

Grant runs an art store that offers multiple classes from painting to crafting. Still in it’s early years, the store is turning a profit but that doesn’t mean Grant isn’t putting in 50-60 hours a week. His only day off is Sunday when he has a long-standing brunch date with his roommate and shop manager. He loves those Sundays and keeps them religiously until a delightful little girl led by a gorgeous man enters his store hoping to make some special gifts for Christmas. The class they have in mind is full up, so rather than listening to his common sense reminders for the need to rest, Grant offers Josh and little Aubrey private lessons. As one week follows another and Grant discovers that Josh is not exactly what he thought he was, things heat up between the two men, but it will take more than proximity to get these two guys to open up and admit they are interested in each other.

I must tell you that I swept through this short story with decided glee. Not only was it interesting to try and decipher just who Josh was in relation to Aubrey, but watching poor Grant fall helplessly in lust was well done and quite fun as well. There was decided chemistry between the two men and Josh really was a bit heart melting in terms of how he treated Aubrey. However, the best aspect of this short story is how Baker gives a real sense of who Grant is in such a short amount of page space. I immediately liked Grant and the interaction with his roommate and best friend just added to my desire to learn more about him. I would love to see him featured in a full-length novel that brings the reader up to the point where he meets Josh.

Homemade from the Heart had just the perfect blend of sexual tension and humor to make it a perfect Christmas read—it will definitely go on my reread list.
