Their weekend together in Pittsburgh was short. Lennox’s dreams still plagued him, but Will’s presence helped ease the haunted feeling that had started to follow him. No place granted him freedom from them: not Boston or Pittsburgh, not Richmond or Leon or Charlottesville. His nightmares followed because they weren’t a place or a person. They were a tangled-up feeling that never left him.

Lennox went back to Boston on Sunday, heavy with dread. His first therapy appointment was only days away. He tried to distract himself with work, with classes, but he couldn’t get his mind away from it. Ava kept pinching him during lit class, pointing her pen at his notes. Every time he looked down, he’d trailed off in the middle of a thought that always ended with the same words: Therapy Thursday

His grandfather had always raved about the absurdity of psychological studies. Cameron had insisted only lunatics needed therapists and that those people hardly needed help unless that meant a strait jacket.

“You’re losing it,” Ava insisted, after class ended Wednesday. “If you’re that scared of it, then don’t bother.”

“I’m not scared. Even if I was, running away doesn’t fix anything.”

Ava swayed her head from side to side. “Just stop obsessing over it. I don’t have any notes from you to compare with now.”

She waved as she jogged away to her next class. Lennox, however, went to the subway and to Lucy’s apartment. His classes were over for the day, and they’d decided to meet for the afternoon. Lucy was dressed in a charming sundress and leggings. He’d never seen her looking so put-together and cute.

“Look at you,” Lennox said after she’d hugged him. “Is Kelly turning you into a sunflower or what?”

Lucy curtsied, then dragged him into the kitchen. She had a full spread of vegetables on the counter as well as a crockpot. Together, they chopped and sliced and tossed everything in the pot. Lucy added some broth and chicken and left it to stew.

“How was Pittsburgh?”

“Fine. Will’s good. He goes back to Virginia tomorrow.”

Lucy nodded as they curled up on the couch and flipped on the television. “You ready for your appointment tomorrow?”

Lennox stared at her. “How do you know about that?”

“Will asked me to keep an eye on you. He’s worried.”

“He’s good at that. I’m fine.”

Lucy pinched his nose. “You keep saying that, but it doesn’t make it true. He’s right to worry. You’re holding everything together, but you’re exhausting yourself. I’m glad you’re going tomorrow. You need this.”

“Right, cause I’m insane. Got to send all of us crazies to the mental wards.”

“You are not. You need to talk to someone about what you’ve been through. Someone who’s not involved in it or as close to you as Will or me or Troy.”

When Lennox didn’t answer, Lucy sat up. “You are going tomorrow, right?”

“I told Will I was.”

“But do you want to?”

Lennox looked away. He had no answer for that. Nightmares had been a constant in his life since his childhood, but never as persistent as these. They’d been fleeting wisps of smoke back then. So much of his daily life had plagued him worse than any nightmare could. Getting rid of them now was a wondrous idea. As a kid, it had always been enough to distract himself with his sister’s care, with school, with making sure they both ate, then later with using all of his willpower and wit to survive his sham of a life.
