NSFW Excerpt from Of Hope and Anguish

A scraping sound woke Eli some time later. He sat up, reaching for the knife he’d stuffed under his pillow. How long had he been asleep? The candle still burned, so it couldn’t have been that long.

The door swung open. Eli slid from the bed and crouched, weapon in hand. But it was Jack who stepped into the room.

Jack reached behind him, closed the door, and secured the latch. “If I thought you wanted to stab me, I wouldn’t have come.”

Eli growled as he set the knife down. “What do you expect when I wake up to someone forcing their way in?”

Revolutionary Temptation (Book 1 of the series)“I wasn’t going to knock and risk waking the house.”

Eli smiled. “You’re getting better, you know? A year ago you would’ve woken me well before you had the door open.”

“I learned from the best.” Jack moved toward him, his gaze sweeping Eli from head to toe. “Are you naked under there?”

Eli licked his lips slowly, hands going to the tie of his dressing gown. “Perhaps.”

“Show me.”

He’d expected Jack to insist they talk first. Eli had intended to make him explain what he was doing there, but Jack was so rarely in this mood, where primitive lust simmered just beneath his calm exterior. Eli longed to unleash that wild part of him, so he opened his dressing gown and let it slip from his shoulders.

Jack skimmed his fingers over Eli’s collarbone. “God, I’ve missed you, missed touching you.”

The words seemed torn from his lips. They’d had so little time together, and Jack had fought so hard not to feel what he did, but those weeks last summer as Eli recovered from what Colonel Stephens had done to him, he and Jack had spent nearly every moment together, and Jack’s body had become as familiar to him as his own.

Jack bent to kiss Eli’s neck. “You’re even more beautiful than I remember.” His warm breath tickled Eli, sending shivers through him. Eli was used to compliments, but he was never sure of them, except from Jack, the one man he knew who would rather say nothing than give false flattery.

“Need you,” Eli murmured.

Jack brushed his thumbs over Eli’s nipples. “Don’t rush me.”

“But—”

“You think I’m not desperate for this? You think I haven’t thought of you every night? Kissing you, fucking you.”

Eli groaned.

“But now that you’re here and we have this time, I’m going to savor it, because…” They didn’t know when they would be together again. The words didn’t need to be said aloud.

Jack lowered himself to his knees, trailing kisses over Eli’s chest and abdomen until he reached Eli’s cock. Eli bit his lower lip, but a whimper of need escaped anyway as Jack hovered there, lips so close to the head of his cock that they were almost…almost touching him.

“Are you going to be able to stay quiet?” Jack asked, turning his gaze upward.

Eli smiled and slid a hand into Jack’s hair. “I can’t beg for what I want if I can’t talk.”

Jack shook his head. “You’re going to get us caught.”

“I won’t scream. I’ll just—”

“Eli, you’re never quiet.” He knew Jack loved that about him, even if it was inconvenient.

Eli looked down, through those damnably long lashes. “I can be.”
