Copy-of-Copy-of-BTBannerEli’s Favorite M/M Historical Romances

Welcome to the blog tour to celebrate the release of my new book, “Robby Riverton: Mail Order Bride”! It’s a historical western m/m romance that has been on my idea list for years, and kept demanding to be written. I finally decided in January to just do it. ?

I really enjoy reading historical romance, especially m/m historical romance. I love to be transported to another time and place and really feel I’m there.  We’re blessed in our genre to have some extremely talented writers of historical fiction. Here’s a list of my favorites m/m historical romances, in no particular order:

gentleman's madnessThe Gentleman’s’ Madness by Summer Devon and Bonnie Dee

I’ve always been interested in turn-of-the-century insane asylums. So when I saw this release from Summer Devon and Bonnie Dee (whose other historical romances I’ve quite liked), I had to get it and read it AT ONCE.

This story is historically accurate, with a strong sense of place and time. Most of this story is set in an insane asylum where one of the MCs has been ‘sentenced’ for a ‘cure’ after his father discovers him in flagrante delicto with another man. The other MC is a staff member at the asylum.

The romance was well-done, with lots of UST building up to the giving in to desires. There was some angst, but it wasn’t terribly dark, which I appreciate. The ending HEA was very satisfying.

Think of EnglandThink of England by KJ Charles

I’ve always loved m/f regency romances, but it’s hard to find a good m/m romance in set in anything but contemporary England for obvious reasons. This book handles that brilliantly. It is absolutely true to that era and uses the difficulties as part of the obstacles/plotline. The attitudes and lingo all felt very accurate. It still has that sort of ‘cozy’ Agatha Christie feel I love while also being a hot m/m romance. Bravo!  I loved the slight GFY twist to this and loved Archie’s bullheaded plodding forward regardless. And the writing is just damn good. There’s not an excess of flowery meandering but every line is well-written. The dialogue especially was just awesome.

The PillarThe Pillar by Kim Fielding

Set in 15th century Bosnia, this is definitely a unique setting! I love Kim Fielding’s fantasy novels such as “Brute”. While this book is set in a real time/place, it has a similar strong sense of world building. During his youth, orphaned thief Faris was flogged at the pillar in the town square and left to die. But a kind old man saved him, gave him a home, and taught him a profession. Now Faris is the herbalist for the town of Zidar, taking care of the injured and ill. He remains lonely, haunted by his past, and insecure about how his community views him. One night he saves a dying slave from the pillar.  This is a wonderfully rich historical hurt/comfort that I highly recommend.

My Fair CaptainMy Fair Captain by J.L. Langley

This is a bit of a cheat because the book is technically sci-fi. But it’s set on a world that mimics Regency England only aristocracy form male-male marriages. So mostly this reads like a regency romance only with young men replacing the virginal young woman and homosexuality being not just the norm but a sort of elevated thing only the privileged class are permitted to do. I loved it!  I really enjoyed both of the MCs and the romance. This is the first in a whole series, all of which are good.

reluctant beserkerThe Reluctant Berserker by Alex Beecroft

Alex Beecroft is another fantastic m/m historical writer. This book features “ a noble and fearsome Saxon warrior, who has spent most of his life hiding the fact that he would love to be cherished by someone stronger than himself.” I love this author’s way with prose and there are so many wonderful and original lines in this book.  I want historical fiction to feel authentic and take me to a time and place I know little about and make me feel like I’m there. This book achieves that. The attitudes towards homosexuality, the touches of witchcraft and religion, the characters of the scobs or musicians, all felt very true to the time and I enjoyed the texture a great deal. There was action and angst and miscommunication in the plot, but thankfully the miscommunication was not overly done and neither MC was overly weak or fearful of saying what they wanted. The plot was rich and fast-paced enough that it kept me reading til the end.

So many great books! I hope “Robby Riverton: Mail Order Bride” has lived up to this worthy tradition of historical romance.

Copy-of-Copy-of-RILEY-RIVERTON-COVER-FINAL-2-1000Being a fugitive in the old west shouldn’t be this much fun.

The year is 1860. Robby Riverton is a rising star on the New York stage. But he witnesses a murder by a famous crime boss and is forced to go on the run–all the way to Santa Fe. When he still hasn’t ditched his pursuers, he disguises himself as a mail order bride he meets on the wagon train. Caught between gangsters that want to kill him, and the crazy, uncouth family of his “intended”, Robby’s only ally is a lazy sheriff who sees exactly who Robby is — and can’t resist him.

Trace Crabtree took the job as sheriff of Flat Bottom because there was never a thing going on. And then Robby Riverton showed up. Disguised as a woman. And betrothed to Trace’s brother. If that wasn’t complication enough, Trace had to find the man as appealing as blueberry pie. He urges Robby to stay undercover until the danger has passed. But a few weeks of having Robby-Rowena at the ranch, and the Crabtree family will never be the same again.

Bio

Copy-of-Copy-of-Copy-of-EliEaston_Road_bwHaving been, at various times and under different names, a minister’s daughter, a computer programmer, a game designer, the author of paranormal mysteries, a fan fiction writer, and organic farmer, Eli has been a m/m romance author since 2013. She has over 30 books published.

Eli has loved romance since her teens and she particular admires writers who can combine literary merit, genuine humor, melting hotness, and eye-dabbing sweetness into one story. She promises to strive to achieve most of that most of the time. She currently lives on a farm in Pennsylvania with her husband, bulldogs, cows, a cat, and lots of groundhogs.

In romance, Eli is best known for her Christmas stories because she’s a total Christmas sap. These include “Blame it on the Mistletoe”, “Unwrapping Hank” and “Merry Christmas, Mr. Miggles”. Her “Howl at the Moon” series of paranormal romances featuring the town of Mad Creek and its dog shifters has been popular with readers. And her series of Amish-themed romances, Men of Lancaster County, has won genre awards.

In 2018 Eli hopes to do more of the same, assuming they reschedule the apocalypse.
