“I need you to trace one of those pay-by-the-minute cell phones,” Lucas told his friend, Rowan Ward. “I’m pretty sure my niece is using one to call us.”

Lucas stood with his phone outside the Eggstraordinaire Diner where Taylor worked. He stared through a large window, watching Nicole try to interact with Snow, who spent more time glaring at the people staring at him. Lucas recognized no one inside the restaurant, so he doubted anyone would know who Snow was. Or him, for that matter. Though…twenty-something years was enough time for people to change completely.

“We’re not the NSA, here, Lucas. If she uses it a lot or you can manage to get the phone number, we might be able to, but even then, it won’t be easy to locate her.”

“Don’t bullshit me. You’ve got a Gidget,” Lucas said, speaking of the highly skilled woman Rowe had in the IT department at his company, Ward Security. “I have faith.” He turned away from the window and pulled his coat tightly closed. The Oklahoma wind was a vicious bitch, who carried frigid cold on long, tenacious fingers that crept under all layers.

The diner was on one of the busiest streets in Collinsville. There were a mix of stores and other restaurants. From where he stood, he could see Johnson Hardware Store. He’d worked there the last summer before he’d left for the Army with Snow. Pam’s Beauty Salon was still right next door to it, though from the aged pictures in the window and faded curtains, it looked as if Pam hadn’t changed a thing in the past two decades, if not longer.

Christmas lights were wrapped around the light poles and there were a few decorative banners advertising the upcoming tree-lighting ceremony right in front of City Hall. It was all a painful reminder that Lucas was in the one town he didn’t want to be in as both his wedding and Christmas approached. The sooner he could get Taylor back home with her mother, the sooner he could return home to be with the family that did love and care about him.

“I have a Gidget, a Quinn, and a Cole now, and it’ll still be a long shot, Lucas,” Rowe grumped, referring to his new IT guy—the one who looked more like one of his behemoth bodyguards. The grouchiness in Rowe’s tone pulled Lucas from his perusal of the town. No one was on the sidewalk around him, but it was too damn cold and windy to be outside for an extended period of time.

“I don’t care what kind of shady shit you have to pull to get this done.”

“Yeah, even so, there’s a reason criminals buy burner phones. Just give me whatever info you have, and I’ll see what we can do. But don’t hold your breath.”

After Rowe had what he needed, he cursed into the phone. “Now, tell me what the fuck you’re doing in Oklahoma when you’re about to get married?”
