Today I am excited to welcome author Zach Sweets to Joyfully Jay.  Zach is here to share more about his new book, Zombie Rain, and today he is interviewing Rex, one of the story’s main characters.  Take it away Zach!

“Hi Rex! Do you have time to answer some of my questions?” Zach asked excitedly.

“Right now? Can’t you see I’m running away from the goddamn zombies?!” He snapped and panted heavily.

“Yes, right now. Surely you can talk and run,” Zach grinned. He wasn’t going to let his snappy comment ruin his enthusiasm.

Rex mumbled under his breath.

“What did you say?” Zach arched his eyebrows, waiting patiently.

“Nothing. What are your questions?” Rex darted his eyes around the room, ensuring that zombies weren’t to be spotted. “You better hurry!”

Zach opened his notepad and had pen in hand. “Where do you come from?”

“Just a couple of miles from Delaware border up north.”

“Have you got family?”

“I used to,” Rex responded sadly. “I put them down after they were turned into one of those fuckers.”

“What? They were turned? I’m so sorry.” Zach frowned.

“It’s okay. Took me a while to accept it but I did.” He smiled weakly.

“Enough of the depressing moments, how did you figure out how to put the zombies to rest without them coming back up?”

“It’s exactly the same things you’d seen in the films over and over. The head’s the way.” Rex gestured a shot toward zombie’s head and mouthed, boom.

Zach grimaced at the thought of zombie heads exploding. “That’s really disgusting. There’s absolutely no cure for them?”

“Sadly, no. If there was ever one, I haven’t witnessed it. Once the bacteria takes over the human body, the mind that controls its body is switched off. Zombies are completely dead from inside and outside. Apparently, bacteria controls the part of the brain that makes them continue walking and compels them to eat the humans.” Rex shrugged, then looked at Zach. “Duck!”

Zach obeyed and he fell down onto the floor, reacting to a loud gun blast above Zach’s head. Zach looked behind him and found a zombie lying on the floor. Fuck, my ears are ringing. “Fuck, that was close!” Zach continued rubbing his ears.

“You got more questions? More of them will come since the gunshots no doubt attracted their attention. Any hint of sounds will get them here.” Rex spoke so fast, while he looked around warily.

“Yes, I’ve still got some questions. What’s the story between you and Jake?” Zach shook his head and picked his pen up off the floor.

“We’re in love with each other, that’s all you need to know. Ya know, you ought to read Zombie Rain to understand what was happening between us.” Rex grinned slyly.

“Where is Jake anyway? I thought he had to be with you no matter what?” Using his pen, Zach scratched his head.

“He’s minding the house where I need to go now. Just follow me already. You can ask more when we get there.”

Rex ran off before Zach was able to respond. Zach had no choice but to chase after him. He quickly glanced behind him and saw there was another three zombies roaring and flailing after them. Zach tripped over a root that was sticking out of the ground. He scrambled and turned around In time to see a zombie crawling backward toward him. It caught up and leapt toward Zach, but Zach kicked as hard as he could, sending the zombie flying backwards. Thankfully, Zach finally found his footing and ran after Rex as fast as he could.

“Hurry up!” Rex shouted.

Rex went inside the house and he held the door open with one hand and a gun in his other. Zach bounded onto the porch and slipped past Rex and into the house. Rex blasted several shots then slammed the door. “That was too close!”

Zach struggled to breathe. He hadn’t run that fast in like forever.

“Yeah, too fucking close.” Rex handed Zach his hand and helped him up. “We’ll talk more. I need to think.”

“Okay.” Zach tried to catch his breath.

That’s all we have from Rex for now. There will be more in the future. Zach Sweets will not give up until he gets all of the answers from Rex and hopefully Jake, too.
