Hi guys! Today please join me in welcoming back Daisy Harris to Joyfully Jay! Daisy is here to share with us her new release, Bossy and the Brat, and has brought a copy to give away to one lucky reader. Welcome Daisy, and thanks for stopping by!
For as long as there has been written language, there have been lovers using words to express their feelings. And as long as lovers have written letters, there have been people reading through things that were in no way love letters and wondering, “Does this guy like me?”
In my latest release, Bossy and the Brat (Men of Holsum College 5), there is a lot of texting. It’s sexy and loving…desperate and passionate. There is stexting, naughty pictures, heated exchanges, and all manner of text message hotness.
But I’m not going to talk about that here…
Here, I’m going to talk about the other kind of texts (and emails, letters, tweets, facebook messages, etc.) that are in no way romantic, and yet the reader tries to read romance into it because he or she is suffering from an unrequited crush.
Bossy and the Brat has some of that, too. Tyler Burk, my painfully insecure hero, starts the book in a fantasyland where he thinks he’s in a relationship with the guy he regularly gives blowjobs to. It’s one of those things where everyone around him knows he and this guy (Hunter Ford, from Holsum College 4) aren’t really dating. He’s lucky my co-hero Cal Beaumont likes him enough to overlook his behavior.
Tyler looked up from his phone, his forehead knitted together in thought. “Can I ask you to read something?” He held his phone in Cal’s direction.
“I guess.” Cal wasn’t sure how to sit close enough to read the phone in Tyler’s hand without climbing onto the bed with the boy. So instead, he opted to sit on his desk chair directly across from him.
“Geez. You don’t make this easy.” Tyler bounded off the bed and in a quick move slid onto Cal’s lap and tossed an arm around his shoulder.
“What—” Cal wanted to shift out from under Tyler’s weight, but the armrests got in his way. That was the second time that night someone had climbed onto his lap and he didn’t know what to make of it. Especially since his cock was itching and filling from the press of Tyler’s ass when it had barely cared for what was between Nicole’s legs. “You know you can’t sit on me like this, Ty.”
“Oh, stop being a prude. You’re straight anyway.” Tyler rotated so that his legs hung over the armrest. He was skinny as a rail, but the move nearly ground off Cal’s balls. “And you’re not my RA anymore.”
Unperturbed by Cal’s wince, Tyler shoved his phone under Cal’s nose. “See, here—” He rolled down the screen to the start of a text-message conversation.
Cal read the bubbles. The first was from Hunter.
U coming to the party tonight?
Yeah! See you there??? Tyler had texted back
Maybe. Could stand a BJ. U game?
Love to!!!!!
Tyler pulled the phone away from Cal’s face. “So we had a date, right?” He held his hands wide, as if he couldn’t understand what those brief text messages had meant if not for him and Hunter to spend a romantic night together.
What I enjoyed most about writing this scene was that I’ve had this exact thing happen to me! Well, not the guy climbing into my lap, but the rest of it. Actually, I’ve had it happen too many times to count, but I still remember the most dramatic time:
I’d been living in San Francisco for a couple years, and six months in an apartment upstairs from a gay guy. I was about twenty-two and he seemed older, though he was probably only in his late twenties. We’d never spoken, and I’d sort of thought he didn’t like me or something. Then, one day, I knocked on his door to borrow an egg and the next thing I knew, I was being dragged into his apartment and asked to read through emails sent to him by his ex-boyfriend.
I shit you not. A person I’d never once spoken to in my entire life.
Apparently, they’d broken up, but were still emailing from time to time, and the sign offs had escalated from “love, Andy (not his real name)” to “lots of love, Andy”, and my neighbor wanted me to comment on whether “lots of love” was a signal, meaning, “I miss you, I love you, I want to get back together, and you should call me.”
I can’t recall what I told my neighbor. Probably the same thing Cal tells Tyler, which is, “Maybe you should find a new boyfriend.”
But I’m sure my neighbor didn’t listen to me. Those lost souls, addicted to their unrequited love, never want to hear sense. For them, there’s always more meaning in the words on the screen, or on the paper. They’ll read between the lines for as long as they need to, or until something better comes a long. Until the right guy comes along to fill their inbox (or other places) with as much love (or other things) as they can handle.
Comment below for a chance to win a copy of Bossy and the Brat (Men of Holsum College 5)
Blurb
Calvin Beaumont is supposed to marry Nicole. He’s a biology major, lab tech, and resident advisor—everything everyone expects him to be. There’s only one problem. He likes boys. In particular, a flirty dance major who was a freshman on his hall.
It’s sizzling summer at Holsum College, and Tyler Burk isn’t a freshman anymore. When he notices his hardworking resident advisor has same-sex feelings, he goads, teases, and tempts Mr. Bossy into dating on the sly. Cal may not be out, but he’s domineeringly hot, and Tyler doesn’t mind keeping things quiet…for a while.
But Calvin has wanted Tyler all year, and their sexting and secret rendezvous soon blossom into something neither one of them can control. Can Cal control his secret, as well as his sexy little brat? Or will he be man enough to admit he’s not the man everyone thought he was?
Bio
Birkenstock-wearing glamour girl and mother of two by immaculate conception, Daisy Harris still isn’t sure if she writes erotica. Her romances start out innocently enough. However, her characters behave like complete sluts. Much to Miss Harris’s dismay the sex tends to get completely out of hand.
She writes about fantastical creatures and about young men getting their freak on, and she’s never missed an episode of The Walking Dead.

I have had many friends ask me to interpret text messages. It is a bum deal! They just want you to confirm what they think is said and I rarely do! The book sounds great, thanks for the post and contest!

LOL. It happens all the time! One reason I’m glad I don’t have too many single friends.
I really enjoyed Bossy and the Brat! It was nice to read a book that incorporates technology/media as a main form of communication between the two main protagonists. I know it is the main component of my day to day communications!
Daisy, the HC series totally rocks! I’m always anticipating the next book in the series….just can’t get enough of those college boys!!!
Thanks for coming over Kristy!!
I am very much enjoying the HC series!

Glad to hear it!
Oh God, being asked for advice when you hardly know the person, let alone the situation…that has happened to me many, many times. (Even worse when *I* was the one interested in the guy, and I have to hear his “do you think she’d ever go out with me?” spiel.) And I have no room to talk, for I could have been crowned Unrequited Crush Queen for long periods in my life. Eek.

It’s happened to the best of us. LOL. I’m sure I’ve stalked guys who were totally not into me in my day as well!
This sounds really good. Please count me in.
Hi there, Courtney! Thanks for commenting!
LOL — my ex-boyfriend (who’s now a really really good friend! We were crap together, but he’s too smart & funny to be given up completely) is always asking for my interpretation of conversations with women he’s interested in!
Really?? A straight guy? I never would have guessed it. Though I admit, back when I was dating we didn’t have text messages.
(How did we survive!)
There’s lots of sign offs that dont really mean what they actually say – see you later is common but it could be days before you see the person again. Reading more into it is the hopeful side of our human nature!

Yep. People are always looking for a sign things are going the way they want.
I hate it when someone wants me to interpret something for them. Usually, they already have made up their minds what they want you to say, and get mad if you don’t agree. The best way is to just ask the other person straight out what they mean.
I have got to get caught up on this series. I loved the first one but have not read the rest yet. Thanks so much for the chance to win a copy. I keep entering & one day will win one of your books, lol.
