I have a thing for a good menage story. However, this seems to be a very difficult thing to do well. The dynamics of three people involved in a relationship are tricky, and very few people are able to find the balance. Threesomes are hot, no doubt about it. But when the sex is over, there has to be something there to keep you entertained and engaged for the rest of the book. In the case of Two for One, I think T.A. Chase did a fairly good job of creating a sustainable emotional connection between all three characters. There were just a few other problems that kept if from being a truly successful novella.
Jack Samson is the new veterinarian for the town of Sumerset. He’s had some relationships, but it would seem those partners had only served to lower his self-esteem. He doesn’t consider himself handsome, and thinks the only thing really going for him is his sexual prowess, according to his ex. When he arrives at PYT, a local gay club, he’s not expecting to attract the attention of anyone, much less two large, gorgeous men who want to bring him into their partnership for the night.
Simon Wittman, a fire chief, and Brady Vanderly, a horse stable owner, trainer and teacher, have been together for 15 years, and play with a third party on a regular basis. While their playing has slowed down over the years as their own partnership became more solid, Brady is convinced that there is a third that is supposed to become a permanent fixture in their lives. The smaller Jack may just be the one they were looking for, as they’re both immediately attracted to him. They’re so turned on, in fact, that they can’t even leave the club before they’re already getting a little crazy in the dark corner.
The sex is certainly not a problem with these three, and if you want some hot threesome action, this is the book for you. I’d say a good 50% or more of this book is sex. It’s steamy and it’s never rote (none of the insert tab A into slot B syndrome), since there are plenty of ways for these three boys to get it on. But when we’re talking about a novella, which is short to begin with, and then spend a good half of it in the bedroom (or kitchen, club, living room, etc.), it doesn’t leave a lot of time for a plot. If plot doesn’t concern you? Have at it. You’ll enjoy the hotness of Simon, Brady, and Jack.
My other biggest complaint is the ending of this story. To say it is abrupt is an understatement. I felt like I was missing the second half of the book. Maybe there is a sequel in the works for these three, which I would not complain about, but I did feel like this novella needed, well, more. More plot, more character development, and certainly more resolution. There is a HFN to keep readers happy, but it just seemed so incomplete as a story.
Sometimes you just need a good menage, and these hot boys can fill that craving for you if that’s what you’re looking for. If you need something more substantial, you’ll want to pass. A look at the cover will tell you that, with Two for One, you’re going to get a lot of heat. Unfortunately, that’s about all you’ll get.
