Hi guys! Today I am excited to welcome author Megan Derr back to the blog. Megan is here to talk to us about her new release, Dance Only for Me, from Less Than Three Press.  Please join me in giving her a big welcome!

Keeping Everything Organized

Years ago, when I first wrote Dance with the Devil, I had no idea the book would explode into one of my longest running and most involved series. Today it has five core novels and a handful of short stories, and I honestly couldn’t say how many more will be written before I finally call the whole thing done.

The tricky part of this is that it means I have to keep track of who is doing what where when. Many of the stories overlap in small ways, and I need to remember what the other characters were doing at the time and how their actions might possibly affect the current story. This gets especially tricky when side characters and short stories get thrown into the mix.

I keep track of it all by way of a rather unexciting spreadsheet and a whole lot of notes in OneNote and a handful of notebooks. Even then, I still often have to reread a bunch of stuff before I begin the next book, and I always quadruple check EVERYTHING even before the story makes it to an editor. Hopefully I’ve managed to make it work so far, and if there are errors, I’ll be honest and say I don’t want to know. It’ll give me a mental breakdown (if you don’t believe me, ask Sasha how much I stress and cry and whine; I take my world building seriously).

I’m not generally comfortable sharing my notes, though I couldn’t tell you why. I never mind if Sasha or Sam or anyone really comes over and steals my computer to read whatever I’ve written for the day, but I get really twitchy about my notes.

All that being said, I thought I would break out of my shell if anyone is at all curious and show you my DwtD spreadsheet. It’s nothing exciting, and probably silly, but if you want to see how I track it all, here you go. Beware there could be spoilers. I don’t think there are, unless you’ve never read any of the books, and even then I doubt you’d get what exactly you’re reading, but I could also be very wrong so have a care.

Any questions, feel free to ask. I will do my best to answer ^__^ Thank you for having me, Jay! 🙂
