Hello everyone! Today I am so pleased to welcome author Indra Vaughn to the blog. ย Indra is here to share some good stuff with us about her book, The House on Hancock Hill. ย She has brought an original excerpt, as well as a great recipe from the book, courtesy of her pastry chef character. Indra has also brought a fabulous giveaway along! ย So please join me in giving her a big welcome!
Pastry chef and bakery owner Jason Wood bakes a mean chocolate soufflรฉ, yet his love life keeps falling flat. Heโd blame his past if he wasnโt trying so hard to avoid it.
When his familyโs farmhouse burns to the ground, heโs summoned to identify a body found in the ashes. Jason returns to Hancock, Michigan, and reunites with a childhood friend, small town vet Henry McCavanaugh. After fifteen years apart, their rekindled friendship soon develops into much more. But Jasonโs baggage threatens their blossoming romance, and he leaves town unannounced to escape his feelingsโand Henryโs feelings for him. He has learned the hard way if something seems too good to be true, itโs best to run for the hills. Jason stress-bakes more confections than he knows what to do with before wondering if heโs running in the wrong direction.
Excerpt
โJesus Christ, Jason,โ came Tomโs voice through the door that hadnโt clicked entirely into its lock when Henry and I had pounced on each other. โYou should tell that bookstore owner to do something aboutโโ Automatically, I took a step away from Henry before Tom burst through the door. Henryโs eyes narrowed, but he let me go. โOh.โ Tom fell back even as he pushed against the door. With one glance, he measured up Henry, my messy hair, the entire situation, and pulled himself together. โIโm sorry,โ he said, completely in control again. He held out his hand, and Henry warily shook it. โI didnโt realize you had company, baby.โ I bristled, but before I could get a noise out, Tom was barging on. โIโm Thomas Ross. Iโm sorry if I interrupted something.โ
Henry didnโt supply his name but let go of Tomโs hand. โYou didnโt,โ he said at the same time I snapped, โYou did.โ Henry closed off fast and panic flared in my gut, wild and uncontrollable.
โTom,โ I said, stepping between the two of them as if Henry needed shielding. โThis really isnโt a good time.โ
โYes, I can see that. I do apologize.โ His gaze flicked from me to Henry, and I resisted the urge to look back, check what Henry was thinking. It wasnโt necessary. The small smile Tom couldnโt hide told me everything I needed to know. I almost physically pushed Tom out the door, but he got his last blow in. โI just wanted to talk to you about our trip to Florida tomorrow morning. Iโll call you later this evening, all right?โ
โHenry,โ I said, finally daring to face him. He no longer looked like he belonged, no longer made my apartment seem like home. Tomโs words had changed his bearing, subtly but unmistakably; his wings had been clipped when he should be soaring. โPlease, donโt leave. Just give me a moment, I will be right back.โ
At first I thought heโd refuse, but he relented with a sigh, shoulders hunching. โIโll wait.โ
Surprising both Tom and myself, I grabbed Tom by the arm and pulled him downstairs. There were boxes with books cluttering up the hallway, and one of the walls had a peeling Tintin mural on it. โThat was a really shitty thing to do, Tom, implying there was still something between us.โ
โI didnโt realize I wasnโt implying the truth.โ Tom pulled his arm free and straightened his suit jacket. It shocked me to see he meant it. โI want to be on that plane with you tomorrow.โ
โI told you, I have to do this alone.โ
โAll right, Iโm sorry, okay? I saw the way he was looking at you andโโ Tom snapped his mouth shut, glanced away, then back up at me again. โOf course you donโt have to do this alone, Jason. You donโt have to do anything alone.โ
โIโm going by myself, Tom.โ He stared at me, apparently unable to believe I was serious. I knew he wouldnโt understand, so I didnโt try to explain.
Tom nodded and then smiled, running a hand through his hair. โHeโs a little bit gorgeous, isnโt he? Your man upstairs.โ
โI donโt think heโs my man anymore, but yeah. I have to get back to him.โ
Swiftly Tom stepped into my space and embraced me. โI donโt suppose Iโll see you again,โ he whispered against my neck. Having no answer for him, I said nothing, just backed away and opened the door, not waiting to see him go. When I turned around, Henry was watching me from the top step and began a slow descent. What all of this must look like from the outside, I could only hazard to guess.
โHenryโโ
โI brought the stuff you left behind,โ he said, looking somewhere past my right shoulder, โin case you needed it.โ
โHenry, please. That wasnโt what you think. Tom and I are no longerโโ A sharp shake of his head shut me up.
โIt was a mistake coming here,โ he went on, tone tinged with a regret I couldnโt stand. โI just thoughtโฆ.โ He looked at the ground. โI couldnโt bear the thought of you here alone after what youโd learned about your dad. But obviously that was foolish of me, Jason. I shouldnโt have presumed.โ
Blueberry Muffin Recipe
The House on Hancock Hill is nearly three months old, itโs pretty hard to believe! (And Michigan any time you want to get with the program, Iโm ready. This time last year I was wearing shorts, just saying.)
So to celebrate here with the lovely Joyfully Jay I want to share with you my favorite blueberry muffin recipe. I found the original on this site, but I did tweak it just a little bit.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups ย all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup sugar, plus 1 tablespoon for muffin tops
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- 1 large egg
- 1/3 โ 1/2 cup reduced fat milk (I use non-fat and it works just as well.)
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup fresh blueberries
- A handful of chocolate chips
Preparation
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
- Line 8 standard-size muffin cups with paper liners. Add some water to the empty muffin cups if you have an oven dish with 12 like I do, so the muffins bake evenly.
- Combine flour, 3/4 cup of the sugar, baking powder and the salt in a large bowl with a whisk. (Whisk at least 10 times.)
- Take a measuring jug that holds at least 1 cup, add the egg, fill the rest of the cup with milk. Add vanilla and whisk.
- Add egg and milk mixture to bowl of flower and combine LIGHTLY.
- Gently fold in blueberries and chocolate chips.
- Divide batter over 8 cups. It will reach the top of the cups, this is fine.
- Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the batter comes off a toothpick in crumbs, not wet.
I promise you, these are the easiest and best blueberry muffins EVER.

I’m a stress-baker myself (and I can see a lot of it in my immediate future–sigh, my poor sweet Sharks!), and I never thought of putting chocolate chips in with the berries! The book sounds really, really good…
I came across the idea of adding chocolate chips because the first time I made these, I only had half a cup of blueberries left, so I thought oh well, why not? No one by my two year old and me will know! And it ended up working really well. I hope you enjoy, if you make them!
Thanks for the recipe! Sounds yummy. And I’ve had the book on my wish list since it came out. I must read it.
Maybe you’ll win a copy ๐
Looks like my kind of book! And my kind of muffins. =)
I hope you’ll like both if you end up trying them ๐
I have already read The House on Hancock Hill and absolutely loved it. ย I then went searching for your other books, which I have also read! ย Please write more books! ย And as soon as fresh blueberries ย come back in season I will try out your recipe. ย I’d love a signed copy of your book, so please count me in for the giveaway. ย
Awww that makes me so happy! I just finished the first book of the Shadow Mountain series and am half way done with the second, so hopefully there will be more soon. Thanks Hannah, that made my day <3 And you're in for the giveaway ๐
Your recipe sounds fantastic! I recently also discovered adding chocolate chips to other recipes featuring berries and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. I need to try that and your books!
Chocolate and berries go so well together mmm… I hope you like the muffins and the book when you have a chance to try either! ๐
The recipe and the book sound wonderful. ย I love to bake and read! ย So, thanks for the giveaway and the post.

You’re in! I hope you like the muffins!
ย I really like muffins ย but I’m not sure if I can get blueberries ย in my country ย ๐ , but I’d try ย with strawberries or cranberries (not fresh). Can ย you recomend me other fruits for the muffins???, thank you for the post ย and the giveaway ย ๐ !!! ย ย
You could try raisins if you like them (I’m not a fan myself), any kind of nut you like, or mash a banana or two. Or bananas AND nuts, yummy! Oh! Or maybe little pieces of apple, I bet that would be really nice too! Hmmm I’m going to have to try that myself now…
Great excerpt & giveaway!
Thank you so much!
I’m a fan of friends to lovers stories and stories with food in them. Thanks for the giveaway!
Thank YOU for entering the contest!
I love to read about food in my stories. ย I have to be gluten free now so I can live vicariously through the books.
Oh wow, that can’t be easy but good for you for managing it! I’m sure it’s healthier than all the stuff Jason’s making…
Friends to lovers is one of my favorite tropes. ๐
Mine too ๐
I love cooking and baking, and I always love when a main character is a cook or baker. This book sounds good and has been on my tbr since before it was released I think. Thanks for the excerpt, recipe, and giveaway.

Thank you Liza!
just my kind of book!!!!! I love cooking and baking and a stress-baker just like Jason!!
ย thanks for this chance
so about the blueberrie muffin recipe I need to understand how to translate cup and teaspoon in Italian (gr and ml) LOL
Hi Stella! That’s a very good point, so here you are:
1 1/2 cups is 195 grams for the flower
3/4 cup is 150 grams for the sugar
1/3 cup is 79 ml for the vegetable oil
1/3 โ 1/2 cup is 79 ml โ 118 ml for the milk
1 cup is 170 grams for the blueberries, but that’s approximate, a few blueberries more or less won’t make a difference!
Enjoy!
Thanks for the giveaway! And for the recipe as well. Though I am terrible at cooking, specially cakes. But my mum’s not giving up yet. ๐
Food! I love food in stories ๐ I hope I win this, if not it goes on my TBR stack. Count me in please, thanks!
