It’s been a few weeks since Mick has moved across the road from Rowen, and he is none the happier for the constant wondering and worrying about the man’s need to be part of Rowen’s life. That can’t happen. Rowen won’t let it. And neither will the voice in his head.
Mick has tried again and again to get Rowen to open up to him, but the man pushes him away over and over. After yet another rejection, Mick is disheartened and unsure of his next move, which is how he ends up getting drunk with his friend Finn.
Hungover and exhausted the next morning, Mick is surprised to find a mumbling Rowen on his doorstep. He is even more surprised when Rowen dumps a dead rabbit on his porch. Apparently, small animals are being killed inhumanely in their forest and Rowen is determined to find out who is doing it and put a stop to it. And Mick refuses to let him pursue his investigation alone.
Blown Kisses is the second installment of Havan Fellows’ Whispering Winds series, and it is also part of Pulp Friction 2014.
This story continues the strange courtship that is Mick and Rowen. These characters are so vastly different that I am kept on the edge of my seat in anticipation, waiting for what happens next. They are so much fun. In Blown Kisses, Fellows makes clearer Rowen’s mental illness, if we can call it that. I’m not exactly sure at this moment. It’s both terrifying and intriguing. I’m unsure what has driven Rowe to become the man he is but I look forward to finding out.
The more of Mick I see, the more I like. In the beginning of the first story he comes off as a complete and utter pest, determined to learn more about the freak. But as time progresses, his persistence has yet to waver even in the face of rejection, yet his goals have adjusted. He no longer considers Rowen a freak, but a worthy cause. He wants to know the man, to help him, so he is consistent in his pursuit. In the end it’s sweet. I’m still uncertain of Mick’s back story and why exactly he is in Mountain Shadows, but I can’t wait for that to come out as well.
While this story was exciting and fun, I think the best part was seeing more of Rowen and his broken psyche. I am dying to know more of what is going on with him. This author also draws in other characters from the Pulp Friction Flagstaff world, bring them into the mystery and investigation of this story, which makes the entire world and the entire set of stories that much more interesting.
I’m having a great time reading this series. Mick and Rowen are among my favorite characters partly because of their quirkiness and partly because their road is not an easy one. I cannot wait to see what comes next for them. I highly recommend Blown Kisses by Havan Fellows.
