“Wonderful, Sean. Keep focusing on slow, deep breaths.” He began tugging at the knot of my tie.

“What… are you doing?” I said, a mixture of panic and heat rushing through me.

“I’m loosening any articles of clothing that might block your air passages.” He sounded so clinical. Damn, it was cute. I took two breaths.

“You’re doing great. Keep your focus.” He had my tie in a slack loop around my neck when he began unbuttoning my shirt, his knuckles brushing the skin there. Chills sped through me. I’m sure my face was as red as a beet. Once he had my shirt opened to the middle of my chest, he pressed the back of his hand to my cheek and forehead. “You’re really warm. Still, better than cold and clammy.”

God, why did he have to touch me and be this close? Not that I didn’t savor each second, even in my panic, but didn’t he realize I was having enough trouble staying calm while trapped in this metal box?

He finally moved back, studying me with those rich brown eyes. “Better?” he asked and reached out as if he might stroke my cheek. But when I stiffened nervously, he dropped his hand to his side.

“Yeah, thanks,” I said, averting my eyes.

“Sure,” he replied, running a hand through his hair. He seemed uneasy.

“What are we going to do?” I said quickly to fill the oncoming silence, but as soon as the words came out, I remembered. “My iPhone!” All hail Steve Jobs. I patted the pockets of my khakis and cursed. In order for the iPhone to be useful, you must have it with you! I hung my head in defeat.

“Let me guess.” Mr. Brown turned to the elevator console. “You left it on your desk.”

I pressed my lips together tightly to prevent anything rude from escaping. I closed my eyes, nodding.

I opened my eyes as he pushed the emergency call button. Duh! Why didn’t I see the big red button before?

The speaker blared with a busy signal. Mr. Brown hit the button again. Busy. I shook my head in disbelief.

“Let me try my DIAD.”

“Your what?”

He removed his handheld scanner from the small black case attached to the dolly. “Delivery Information Acquisition Device.”

“Does it have web or phone functions? Any type of signaling device?” I was excited enough to nearly grab it from him.

“I can access the Internet and make calls.” He pressed a few keys and the screen. After a few more taps his brow furrowed. “No service.”

“Great.”

“You normally get reception in the elevators?”

“Yeah. If you’re not getting anything, the towers must be out. Or overloaded.” I thought for a moment. “This has to be another power outage like this morning, especially with this.” I waved toward the unlit console. Then I pointed to the floor lights. “These are attached to the backup generator.”

“I wonder how big this outage is?” He dragged a hand through his thick black hair. “If the wireless towers are down and emergency services are busy, it must be pretty far-reaching.”

“Or the world is ending.” I swallowed and let myself slide down to sit on the floor.

Mr. Brown smirked, looking down at me. “Maybe it’s the zombie apocalypse?”

“Never joke about zombies.” I attempted a weak smile and rested my head against the dark wood paneling, closing my eyes. I opened them when I felt him slide down to sit next to me. Really fucking close. Even in this tin can, including the dolly, there was easily enough room for him to avoid being on top of me. Why crowd me? Could he be one of those people who had no concept of personal space? Why was I complaining?

His muscled shoulder touched my bony one, the rest of his body mere inches away. Heat radiated off him and I inhaled his musky aftershave. He sat with his legs bent and a hand resting on his thigh, mirroring me. Being near-sighted, I pushed my glasses up onto my head in order to get a better look at his brown cotton covered form. Unfortunately, it made me painfully aware of how different we were. He had a natural tan where I was pasty white. He had chiseled legs and my legs were lost in a sea of beige fabric. His chest strained his button-down shirt in the shape of sculpted pecs, my shirt laid flat as if draped over a two by four. His hair was thick, dark, and artlessly styled, while mine was limp, mousy, and prone to cowlicks. I could go on. If I had had any self-esteem before, it would have been completely gone by now.

“The color of your eyes is amazing.”

His voice seemed to come out of nowhere, sliding over me like silk. I lifted my gaze, startled, his face a breath away from mine.

“Sorry.” He moved back, noticing my surprise. At least he didn’t notice the sudden shift in my pants.
