2014GRL_Featured_Bloggers_sq175Hi! We’re Lisa Henry and J.A. Rock. Today we’re here at Joyfully Jay talking about our newest release, Another Man’s Treasure. Check out how to win a copy at the bottom of this post!

Thanks so much to Jay for having us!

If there’s one thing that we would want to tell everyone about Another Man’s Treasure, it’s this: THIS IS NOT A ROMANCE. There is romance in it, but it’s not a romance. We all know how romances work. Two people meet at the beginning. There is an attraction. There is a hurdle to overcome. It ends happily.

Not here.

Here, two people are torn apart at the beginning. There is an abduction. There is a homicidal maniac to overcome. It ends.

And, to be honest, this is one of the main reasons we decided not to go with a publisher for Another Man’s Treasure. Some publishers ask for a HEA. Some give you a little more latitude. These days you can write HFN, or even what are called bittersweet endings where, I guess, someone leaves or dies or something. We wouldn’t even call our ending bittersweet, because this book was never a romance to begin with.

Another Man’s Treasure is definitely written for those who like their stories darker. In it, we tried to explore how violence, power, and love sometimes go hand in hand. How we sometimes love people who do bad things, how our concept of ethics doesn’t always mesh with survival. And we wanted to give ourselves permission to create a world that is not black and white, a story that doesn’t wrap up tidily, and an MC who’s not a hero, who wants only to stay alive.

It is a story about relationships. Our main character, Ilia, has an arc that is deeply influenced by the men he encounters: the man he loses, the man who breaks him, the man who offers him hope in an impossible situation, and the man who played catalyst to Ilia’s rebellion, who, in his efforts to make Ilia feel small, instilled in him a desire for freedom that ultimately keeps Ilia going–his father.

We’re not sure what label to stick on AMT, or whether we need one, but since our shared writing history is in the romance genre, and since we do think “romance” carries with it a set of expectations, we wanted to offer readers our take on what we’ve written, and let you decide if you want to go there with us.

It’s not a romance, but we hope it’s a hell of a ride.

Bio

Lisa Henry lives in tropical North Queensland, Australia. She doesn’t know why, because she hates the heat, but suspects she’s too lazy to move. She spends half her time slaving away as a government minion, and the other half plotting her escape.

She attended university at sixteen, not because she was a child prodigy or anything, but because of a mix-up between international school systems early in life. She studied History and English, neither of them very thoroughly.

She shares her house with too many cats, a dog, a green tree frog that swims in the toilet, and as many possums as can break in every night. This is not how she imagined life as a grown-up.

You can visit Lisa her website, at Goodreads, or on Facebook or Twitter.

J.A. Rock has worked as a dog groomer, knife seller, haunted house zombie, standardized patient, cashier, census taker, state fair quilt hanger, and, for one less-than-magical evening, a server—and would much rather be writing about those jobs than doing them. J.A. lives mostly in West Virginia, and always with a beloved dog, Professor Anne.

Another Man's Treasure

Ilia Porter is Chechen mob boss Mikhail Kadyrov’s greatest treasure. After leaving home at eighteen to escape his verbally abusive father, beautiful, selfish Ilia has lived with Mikhail, proud of his ability to bring such a powerful man to his knees to worship. But when Ilia’s father, a police captain, kills Mikhail in a raid, Ilia’s world falls apart.

Entering to pick up the pieces is Mikhail’s younger brother, Nick—impulsive, power-hungry, and dangerous. When Nick tells Ilia he’s taking everything that belonged to Mikhail—including Ilia—Ilia is too lost in grief to fight. Nick takes Ilia prisoner in the apartment Ilia once shared with Mikhail and grooms him for a very important mission: to kill Ilia’s father and avenge Mikhail’s death.

Ilia wants no part in the plot, but being Nick’s ally is preferable to being Nick’s victim, so he begins to warp himself into the monster Nick wants him to be. Hope arrives when Nick takes another captive: Patrick, a shy massage therapist who’s stronger than he seems. Patrick and Ilia must join forces to escape Nick—and to keep each other whole as Nick does everything in his power to break them.
