Today I am so pleased to welcome Charlie Cochet to Joyfully Jay. Charlie has come to talk to us about her latest release, Hell & High Water (THIRDS, Book 1). She has also brought along…. Please join me in giving her a big welcome!

Hi all! It’s day four of the Hell & High Water Blog Tour and I’m thrilled to be here at Joyfully Jay’s, celebrating the release of the first book in my new THIRDS series. Again, a big thank you to Jay for hosting me and to everyone who’s following the tour.  Today you’ll get a sneak peek into the heart of the THIRDS, the agents.

grl tour badgeOn our last stop, I talked a little about the origins of the Therian-Human Intelligence Recon Defense Squadron and how it’s made up of an equal number of Human and Therian employees. When creating the THIRDS, I had to think about more than just the organization, but the agents who lay at the heart of it. These agents wouldn’t just be enforcing the law, they would essentially be the future of Human-Therian society.

The THIRDS motto is Coniuctis Viribus: With United Powers. The THIRDS is the first government organization created to promote equality with one common goal: justice for all. Obviously the THIRDS isn’t perfect, as you’ll come to see in the series, and its agents have many faults. Still, they’re the next step toward uniting Humans and Therians. The first six books in the series focus on agents who work for the Manhattan branch of the THIRDS, which is NYC’s THIRDS headquarters. Each THIRDS branch is comprised of four units: Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Omega. Units Alpha and Beta handle major crimes, with Alpha taking the more violent crimes. Delta and Omega handle lesser crimes. Those units are then broken down into squads.

The heroes of Hell & High Water are part of Unit Alpha which has ten squads. Their squad is Destructive Delta. From there, the squads are broken down into teams consisting of two agents each–a Human and a Therian. Each team works for a specific department. Are you confused yet? Don’t worry, I confused myself plenty of times putting it all together. It’s not nearly as confusing in the books. The three main departments agents work for are Intel, Recon, and Defense.

You can find out the full job descriptions here, but the short version is that Intel handles intelligence gathering. These guys and gals rarely leave the office. They’re the brains of the operation. Secret behind the scenes stuff. Recon are the detectives. They go out, gather evidence, investigate, follow leads, and solve cases. Defense agents are the muscle. They train hard and mean business. They’re the tactical force of the THIRDS and are called out to handle high risk situations. They drive around in BearCats (tactical armored vehicles) and carry big guns. Their Therian agents are made up of apex  predators. Which leads us to our next stop where we’ll be talking about Unit Alpha’s apex predator agents. Lions, and Tigers, and Jaguars. Oh my!

HellHighWaterHiRes200When homicide detective Dexter J. Daley’s testimony helps send his partner away for murder, the consequences—and the media frenzy—aren’t far behind. He soon finds himself sans boyfriend, sans friends, and, after an unpleasant encounter in a parking garage after the trial, he’s lucky he doesn’t find himself sans teeth. Dex fears he’ll get transferred from the Human Police Force’s Sixth Precinct, or worse, get dismissed. Instead, his adoptive father—a sergeant at the Therian-Human Intelligence Recon Defense Squadron otherwise known as the THIRDS—pulls a few strings, and Dex gets recruited as a Defense Agent.

Dex is determined to get his life back on track and eager to get started in his new job. But his first meeting with Team Leader Sloane Brodie, who also happens to be his new jaguar Therian partner, turns disastrous. When the team is called to investigate the murders of three HumaniTherian activists, it soon becomes clear to Dex that getting his partner and the rest of the tightknit team to accept him will be a lot harder than catching the killer—and every bit as dangerous.
