Hello all! Thank you for joining me on another stop of the Blood & Thunder blog tour, and a big thank you to Joyfully Jay for hosting me! Today I thought I’d talk a little about the challenges of writing a character like Dexter J. Daley, the MC in the current THIRDS books.

You’d think characters like Sloane and Ash–the tough and broody alphas, would be more of a challenge to write than a happy-go-lucky guy like Dex. To date, I think Dex is one of my more complex characters. He’s a full-glass kind of guy, because as he puts it, who the heck wants half of anything? Then there are the things that come out of his mouth. If you’ve read Blood & Thunder or Hell & High Water, you’ll know just what I mean. He loves to sing, is obsessed with the eighties, and addicted to Cheesy Doodles.

Dex is the “funny kid” you had in your elementary or high school class. The one everybody loved because he made everyone laugh. He was never snarky or a jerk. He was a genuinely cool guy. Everyone wanted to be his friend, and sometimes it felt like they were. But there had to be more to him than the jokes and laugh out loud moments. Something had to make him tick. What’s he like when things go wrong?

I knew after finishing Hell & High Water that it was going to be a challenging journey, not just with the rest of the series, but with Dex. He had to continue to grow as a person but keep that full-glass attitude and cheeky smile, despite whatever hell was going on around him, because that’s what makes him Dex. Aside possessing a never ending supply of energy, he’s resilient, stubborn, would do anything for his family, and when he sets his mind to something, there’s no stopping him, which of course can be dangerous too.

In Hell & High Water, Dex was introduced to his new team and partner. By the end of the book, Dex and Sloane decide to do something about their smoldering attraction to each other. Dex does everything he can to get under Sloane’s skin. In Blood & Thunder, things start to get complicated. Dex is forced to face situations he’d never faced before, both professionally and personally. He’s determined to be the light in the darkness for Sloane while he maneuvers through the minefield that’s their relationship. As the series continues, Dex’s resolve is tested by his lover, his family, his teammates, and his job. But it’s not all drama and angst. Dex has plenty of sweet moments, gets himself into plenty more trouble—something he has a knack for, and continues to flash that Daley charm while dishing out his one-liners. Welcome to the world of Dexter J. Daley. Hang on tight, because the rides abut to get bumpy.

Blurb

Blood & Thunder (THIRDS, Book 2)When a series of bombs go off in a Therian youth center, injuring members of THIRDS Team Destructive Delta, and causing a rift between agents Dexter J. Daley and Sloane Brodie, peace seems unattainable. Especially when a new and frightening group, the Order of Adrasteia, appears to always be a step ahead. With panic and intolerance spreading and streets becoming littered with the Order’s propaganda, hostility between Humans and Therians grows daily. Dex and Sloane, along with the rest of the team, are determined to take down the Order and restore peace, not to mention settle a personal score. But the deeper the team investigates the bombings, the more they believe there’s a more sinister motive than a desire to shed blood and spread chaos.

Discovering the frightful truth behind the Order’s intent forces Sloane to confront secrets from a past he thought he’d left behind for good, a past that could not only destroy him and his career, but also the reputation of the organization that made him all he is today. Now more than ever, Dex and Sloane need each other, and, along with trust, the strength of their bond will mean the difference between justice and all-out war.
