After the reappearance of his friend and mentor, Rowen’s life is an open book to the residents of Mountain Shadows and, instead of turning their backs on him like expected, they rally around him and swear to stand by him no matter what. But no matter what may be just around the corner.
While pondering the fact that everybody knows everything about him again, Rowen spies Mick and two of their friends walking around his cabin. Unsure of his emotional footing, Rowen takes hold of old faithful and tries to ignore Mick and the others. He should have known Mick wouldn’t go away that easily. Mick and the guys say they were locking up his cabin, but when Rowen and Mick reach the door, it’s unlocked and open. The trek around back reveals a tranq gun aimed at the front door. Rowen doesn’t fear for his life, but vows to keep Mick safe.
Mick knows Rowen has been through some crazy shit in his life, but it doesn’t make him love him any less. When ghosts from Rowen’s past show up, guns ablazin’, Mick is caught is caught in the crossfire and would be considered collateral damage without Rowen’s protection. But Rowen is craftier than even his pursuers know. When all seems lost, Rowen realizes the only light in his life is Mick and he will do anything to keep the man happy and alive.
This book shattered me. Do you hear me? In million tiny, bitty piece, it shattered me all over the floor. I am a freaking mess. I’m certain that Havan Fellows set out to destroy me with this book and she did a damn good job of it. So yes, after the previous book, Wicked Winds, we finally know Rowen’s story and it’s heartbreaking and earthshattering. This book picks up where that one ends. Wick and Ned leave and Rowen is left to pick up the pieces of his life, but he finds out that his friends have already cleaned up the mess and are ready to help him put his life back together and deal with crazy guys from the “organization.” This organization is full of some pretty bad guys—nasty, crazy men who kill for the hell of it. And now they’re either trying to take care of a mistake from long ago or worried about embarrassment, I don’t know, but the chase that ensues is an action packed, spy-adventure of a thrill ride. I’ve probably mentioned this before, but it merits saying again Wick is one crazy ass motherfucker. There’s no other way to put it. And yes, it is pertinent to the story. Ah, I’ve already said Ned and Wick are in this book so that’s no surprise, and it just makes this book that much better to have Wick stick around for one more story, doesn’t it?
Fellows does an amazing job of building tension in this book from the mystery to the tasks, from the relationship to the surprise. I never knew which way was up in this installment. From the very beginning, it started with a bang and kept rolling and getting bigger and bigger and bigger. I felt every single emotion that rattled and twisted through both Rowen and Mick, and then the end. Geez! I said it before and I’ll say it again. I’m pretty sure this author has set out to destroy me.
If you’ve never read Havan Fellows before, you’re missing out. This is the fourth book in her Whispering Winds series and the entire series is great, but this book is the best in the series. I think I may have said that about the last book. I now pass the title on. I highly recommend Blown Chance by Havan Fellows.
