Denny works for a secret branch of the government apprehending Ethereal Beings, commonly known as elves.  Then general population doesn’t know about EBs, and the government wants to keep it that way.  When Denny spots a busker in the subway, he knows instantly that the man is an EB.  After chasing him down, Denny takes Kit into custody.  Through a series of traffic snarls and computer problems, Denny is forced to keep Kit overnight in his emergency cage.

Since meeting Kit, some of the ideals that Denny has held close about what he was taught by the government are shaken.  When he gets a mysterious letter from his great uncle, he has second thoughts about Kit.  He goes to the cage to find a lifeless Kit.  Panicked, Denny brings him inside.  He wakes a few hours later to find Kit hale and healthy again.  EB’s need human contact to thrive, and Kit will fade without it.  The longer Denny and Kit spend together, the stronger Kit becomes.  Denny is attracted to the elf, and Kit seems perfect for him.  Kit even understands Denny’s kink for cross dressing.

Denny isn’t sure what he can believe any more.  He’s always been taught that EB’s aren’t sentient, that they invade people’s minds, and will fade without human contact.  The more he knows Kit, the more he realizes only the last thing is true.  If he doesn’t take Kit in, though, he’ll be in a world of trouble.  Except now that he’s caught Kit, he doesn’t want to let him go.

Oh, wow, guys.  This was a fun and interesting twist on the elves theme.  I really liked the world building here.  The general population has no idea that elves really exist and the government is striving to keep it that way.  But the propaganda they spout to their agents is pretty much untrue, and it causes Denny to have to reevaluate everything he thought he knew.

And Denny?  Oh, my heart went out to him.  He really struggled with himself in a lot of ways.  He’s just trying to be a good person and a good dad.  Which is why he took the job in the first place.  He needed something stable.  But he blindly believed what he was being told and he was so very shaken when he found out it was lies.  More than that, he’s a bit ashamed of his need and desire to cross dress.  So when Kit seems to be not only attracted to him, but loves him in panties and corsets, Denny thinks it’s too good to be true.  I loved his internal struggle while he tried to figure out how to have what he wants and needs, and balancing that with what he felt was right.  This guy goes through a lot of growth over the course of the story and I loved watching him on his journey.

Kit is exactly what Denny needs and their connection just leaps off the page.  From the moment Denny wakes up in his house to find Kit cooking, I could see how well they fit together.  The sex scenes were scorching hot, their compatibly translating well there.  Kit may be an EB, but he has his own wants and needs, and they mesh perfectly with Denny’s.  Kit is a really sympathetic character and I found myself rooting for him to get his happily ever after.  He is who he is, and he needs human connection in order to thrive, and he can’t understand why that’s wrong.  And the truth that it isn’t wrong is what finally gets these guys past their hurdles.

I did have a few small quibbles with the story.  For knowing each other for such a short time, Denny and Kit formed a tight connection.  As I said, it was easy to see how they fit together, but it was harder for me to see that sustaining them in the long run.  I think if there had been a few more scenes of them outside of the bedroom, it would have been easier.  I also had trouble understanding some of Kit’s actions later on in the story.  He left because it was the best thing for Denny, but then ended up in a very visible place.  It didn’t ring true to me, and I struggled with it a little.

Overall, this was a really charming story with some fantastic world building.  I loved the new and interesting take on elves.  It’s the first of a series, and the end of the book finishes the plot while setting up future stories.  I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens next.
