Love Letters Between a Vampire Prince and a Human Cop

Vina: This happens just after Book 2 in the Orbus Arcana series: A Bite In Time. Vince has had to spend a lot of time back in Verno because his father is considering supporting Vince’s reinstatement as the Lord Heir. It’s by no means a shoo-in, so he’s had to go back: getting permission from the Jurisdictio, making nice with the Council, yadda, yadda, yadda. You know, usual stuff for a vampire Prince. One morning, waking up in John’s bed, he realizes he’s going to be away for a couple of days. Before he could over-think the issue (Vince does tend to brood), he writes John a letter, which he props by the mirror in the bathroom. Remember, Vince was schooled many hundreds of years ago, so his handwriting is precise and neat. I envy him. I’ve spent a lot of time in Vince’s library at his home in Tempe, reading up on his culture, making sure I got his story right. And sometimes I would leave him a note with a question or two about something. One day, he left me one that said…Vina, amica mia bellissimaSend me an email with your questions. I cannot read your writing. Well!

Amante,

For so long, I have wanted to share who I am with you. Now that time has come but duty calls. Last night, I thought about the first time I saw you. You were dressed in dark grey pants and a blue polo. That shade brings out the color of your eyes, and you were almost too handsome to look at. I am not sure how I kept my equilibrium as you drilled me about the car crash and Sala’s dead body. All I could think was how much I wanted you to look at me with those blue eyes as we made love. Want quickly became need, and I could not get you out my mind. I never dared to hope you could be mine; that one day, my dreams would be reality; and that I would wake every morning to see you beside me. You are giving up so much to be with me. I pray that I can be worthy of your sacrifice. I never realized, either, how it was possible to be lonely, even when surrounded by people. Yet, in the midst of these crazy, busy days, I find myself missing you. Missing your teasing and your irreverence. The only thing that keeps me going is the thought that I can come back to wherever you are, and you will rejuvenate me with your words and your touch. We have so many obstacles facing us, but I swear I will make this work. Because you want to as well. For you, I would defy every tradition I hold dear. This crown I hope to wear someday, that you tease me about, would be nothing without you by my side.

 Io sono tuo, Vin.

Viki: When John reads Vincent’s love letter he’s speechless. Not one to express himself in such flowery prose, he doesn’t really know how to react to Vin’s declaration of love. Yes, he feels the same way, but as John once told me, sometimes Vincent is too emotional in his love for him. This outright declaration of love, put down on paper in black and white makes him slightly embarrassed. Words aren’t John’s way, but fuck, he’d write a damn note back, because Vin would be hurt if he didn’t respond in kind. He never in his life thought he’d be writing a love note!

Ahem, John is acting all macho about the love note, but I just saw him fold it and stash it in his wallet.

Vin,

I was surprised to receive your note. You know I’m not good with words. That is your department. And, as you can see I typed this note on the computer, because how can I compete with your handwriting or your prose? The first time I saw you, I was suspicious: too goddamn good-looking, that accent had to be fake, and the way you moved, like a dancer, so why was this beautiful man baking cupcakes in the desert. It just didn’t fit. My instincts flared so hot I wanted to arrest you on the spot or else kiss you. Lucky for me, the latter worked out. I also remember our first kiss. You were the first man I let kiss me. The thrill went deep into my chest and my heart was lost to you. Okay, I’m stopping now. I’m embarrassed just reading the last few sentences I wrote to you. I hope you’re satisfied that you made me write such an idiotic note. (Yeah, I’m smiling.) Don’t worry, babe, I’ll always be here waiting for you.

Yeah, I’m yours too,

John
