Hello all! Thank you so much for joining me on my blog tour for Rise & Fall, the fourth book in my law-enforcement shifter series, the THIRDS. For those familiar with the series, you know it centers on a race of shifters known as Therians. But did you know there’s a Greek mythology theme running through the THIRDS series?

Shapeshifters can be found throughout history in the mythology and lore of various cultures. I’ve always been fascinated with Greek mythology, and writing a series based on humans who could willingly shift into animal form reminded me of all those amazing stories from Greek mythology. Being the geek I am, I injected a little Greek mythology into the THIRDS. Many of the names used in the series for places and objects are drawn from Ancient Greek mythology, their meanings corresponding. Some have been adapted or the spelling changed, but its core influence remains the same.

Here are a few examples:

Bar Dekatria – is owned by Bradley, the sexy, tattooed, jaguar Therian bartender. The design was inspired By New York City’s Bar 13. Dekatria is Greek for 13.

Melanoe virus – is what starts it all. Unleashed during the Vietnam War and infecting millions. Hundreds of thousands died. This terrible virus spawned from chemical warfare was named after Melinoe, a nymph from the underworld, a bringer of nightmares and madness.

Eppione.8 – is the vaccine used to cure the Melanoe virus. It also awakens a dormant mutation within the virus, giving birth to Therians. Epione was one of the Health deities, the goddess of soothing of pain.

The Styx– the bar/restaurant where Sloane’s former partner and lover was killed. Styx was the Titaness of the Underworld river Styx and personification of hatred, which I felt was fitting for the man who killed Gabe, a man filled with so much hate.

Hyacinth – the Styx Bar’s tables have vases with hyacinth flowers, and later in Blood & Thunder, Isaac Pearce taunts Sloane by signing in at the Therian Registration office under the name Zeph. Hyacinth was the beautiful young lover of the God Apollo, but he was also admired by the West Wind, Zephyr. One story says that Hyacinth and Apollo took turns throwing a discus, and in his jealousy, Zephyr blew Apollo’s discus off course, striking Hyacinth in the head and killing him. Not allowing Hades to claim the young man, Apollo made a flower from Hyacinth’s spilled blood, and his tears stained the flower’s petals.

Themis – is the THIRDS powerful, multimillion dollar government interface. It’s linked to numerous intelligence agencies across the globe and runs a series of highly advanced algorithms to scan surveillance submitted by agents. Themis is also the Titaness of divine law and order. A statue of her stands outside THIRDS HQ.

Sparta – is the nickname THIRDS agents have given the training facility at the THIRDS, and named after the city of Sparta which focused on military training and excellence.

The Order of Adrasteia – is the Human extremist group Isaac Pearce becomes the leader of. Adrasteia was also a nickname of Nemesis, the name itself meaning “inescapable” and the goddess of revenge. Nemesis was the spirit of divine retribution against those who succumb to arrogance before the Gods.

The Ikelos Coalition – is the Therian extremist group headed by tiger Therian Beck Hogan. Ikelos, also known as Phobetor, was one of the personifications of nightmares and had the ability to appear in dreams in the form of animals. The Phobetor could also appear in the mortal realm in the guise of various animals and could change their physical forms at will to interact with mortals.

There are more spread out throughout the series, but these are some of the ones already out there. I simply couldn’t help myself. Many of our modern stories have been influenced by the stories of the past, and getting to slip in a little mythology was so much fun.

Blurb

rise and fallAfter an attack by the Coalition leaves THIRDS Team Leader Sloane Brodie critically injured, agent Dexter J. Daley swears to make Beck Hogan pay for what he’s done. But Dex’s plans for retribution are short-lived. With Ash still on leave with his own injuries, Sloane in the hospital, and Destructive Delta in the Coalition’s crosshairs, Lieutenant Sparks isn’t taking any chances. Dex’s team is pulled from the case, with the investigation handed to Team Leader Sebastian Hobbs. Dex refuses to stand by while another team goes after Hogan, and decides to put his old HPF detective skills to work to find Hogan before Theta Destructive, no matter the cost.

With a lengthy and painful recovery ahead of him, the last thing Sloane needs is his partner out scouring the city, especially when the lies—however well intentioned—begin to spiral out of control. Sloane is all too familiar with the desire to retaliate, but some things are more important, like the man who’s pledged to stand beside him. As Dex starts down a dark path, it’s up to Sloane to show him what’s at stake, and finally put a name to what’s in his heart.
