The Devil Will Do Blog Tour

Something Wicked This Way Comes: Heidi’s Kinky, Dark-Edged Fairytale

I’ve resigned myself to being a subgenre flitter, writing mainly in contemporary but dabbling into historical, paranormal, and fantasy. My fantasy always whispers into edges of darkness, and a lot of it is sensual or slightly kinky. The Devil Will Do is a full-on swan dive into both.

I wanted to play with the concepts of pain, of consent, and of the razor-edge between loving one’s humiliation kink and being consumed by shame in an unhealthy way. When I wrote it the first time, I will confess I got the better of myself, and when faced with a few hard issues, I sort of skirted them, which taught me the hard lesson that going halfway is worse than not going at all. So this time, I went further, and harder.

This book is pretty kinky. Eryn has sex with, um, a lot of people before he connects with his prince charming, and Wyn is pretty clear he intends to enjoy passing Eryn around into their HEA. When I revisited the book I edited down some sections and greatly expanded others, and the biggest section I expanded was the sex. This is as close to full-blown erotica as I come, possibly arriving there full-stop.

The other element about this book I drilled down on was the darker edges. I took out some of the grimmer parts that I found, in the passage of time, I didn’t care for, but doing that ended up having me put in some other shadows. I think this happened because the biggest thing I’ve always been exploring in this story is the idea that it’s scary to know you want something a lot of people will judge you for. Homosexuality is the least of Eryn’s problems. He truly loves being not only subjugated but shamed, and that leads him into some terribly grey areas, especially inside his own head. I’ve had dark sexual fantasies in my head since the first whispers of puberty, and I always kept them to myself because I damn well knew better. I wrote them down and usually burned them, literally. Even when I was trying to write for publication, I would often start secret files where I would let all the shackles off and just go.

Without entirely meaning to do so, The Devil Will Do became the place where I faced my own demon about what I write and how and why. In approaching it this time, I came armed knowing what I was coming for, and I must say, I’m proud of the result. This story is absolutely not for everyone. But if you heard me say “this is really kinky and a little bit dark, and there’s some dub-con and humiliation kink and some orgies” and you got quietly excited? Come on over. I got something for you.

Blurb

The Devil Will DoIn a land unforgiving of indulgent, dangerous sex, merchantman Eryn does his best to keep his desires in the dark…until the plight of a beautiful prince leads him out of the shadows and into adventures both sensual and terrible.

Capture, curse, and torture litter Eryn’s road to true love, along with carnal delights beyond his most wicked imaginings. His strengths and limitations are exposed—and the hard truth, that nothing holds him back more than the monster of self-loathing in his heart. Prince Wyn might be everything he’s dreamed of in a man—and master—but before Eryn can accept the exquisitely wicked affections of his one true love, he must first save himself…from himself.

This novella was originally published under the title Sweet Son and has been significantly revised.
