According to Hoyle by Abigail Roux
Theme: Historical

According-to-HoyleBy the close of 1882, the inhabitants of the American West had earned their reputation as untamed and dangerous. The line between heroes and villains is narrow and indistinct. The concept that a man may only kill if backed into a corner is antiquated. Lives are worth less than horses. Treasures are worth killing for. And the law is written in the blood of those who came before. The only men staving off total chaos are the few who take the letter of the law at its word and risk their lives to uphold it. But in the West, the rules aren’t always played according to Hoyle.

U.S. Marshals Eli Flynn and William Henry Washington are escorting two prisoners to New Orleans for trial when they discover there’s more to the infamous shootist Dusty Rose and the enigmatic man known only as Cage than merely being outlaws. When forces beyond the marshals’ control converge on the paddlewheeler they have hired to take them downriver, they must choose between two dangers: playing by the rules at any cost or trusting the very men they are meant to bring to justice.

Cover art by Susan Lee

Welcome to another place in time…where one can be swept away into lands and eras long forgotten.

This collection of short stories was birthed because a sworn “I don’t like historicals” reader fell in love with what have become some of her favorite books by most of her favorite writers. Surprisingly, they were all historicals. Determined to make others feel the love, these authors were asked to contribute small tastes of how amazing historical storytelling can be.

Included in this anthology:

“Office Romance” by Tamara Allen
“Introducing Mr. Winterbourne” by Joanna Chambers
“The Ruin of Gabriel Ashleigh” by KJ Charles
“Unfair in Love and War” by Kaje Harper
“Carousel” by Jordan L. Hawk
“Deliverance” by Aleksandr Voinov

Along with a foreword written by Alex Beecroft, enjoy these original short stories that make up “Another Place in Time”.

All proceeds from the purchase of this anthology will be donated to AllOut.org in celebration of LGBT History Month, October 2014.

Theme: Futuristic

blissThey’re always happy.

Rory James has worked hard all his life to become a citizen of the idyllic city-state of Beulah. Like every other kid born in the neighboring country of Tophet, he’s heard the stories: No crime or pollution. A house and food for everyone. It’s perfect, and Rory is finally getting a piece of it.

So is Tate Patterson. He’s from Tophet, too, but he’s not a legal immigrant; he snuck in as a thief. A city without crime seems like an easy score, until he crashes into Rory during a getaway and is arrested for assaulting a citizen. Instead of jail, Tate is enrolled in Beulah’s Rehabilitation through Restitution program. By living with and serving his victim for seven years, Tate will learn the human face of his crimes.

If it seems too good to be true, that’s because it is. Tate is fitted with a behavior-modifying chip that leaves him unable to disobey orders—any orders, no matter how dehumanizing. Worse, the chip prevents him from telling Rory, the one man in all of Beulah who might care about him, the truth: in a country without prisons, Tate is locked inside his own mind.

It isn’t until that night, unable to sleep, that he realises the stranger is a man he’d been dreaming of for some time—a man who had made love to him night after night.

The Last thing Duncan MacGregor remembers is that he was home in Glen Ardor, Scotland, betrothed to Margaret Macallister as a bond between their two feuding clans.

Darren isn’t sure if Duncan is playing a game, suffering from amnesia of just plain nuts, but his attraction to Duncan outweighs his scepticism and he takes him home, determined to find the truth.

Duncan believes he was enchanted by a witch who told him his destiny was not in Scotland, nor to be married to Margaret but to have a life of love and adventure with a man—the man he had dreamt of night after night—Darren.

As much as Darren wants to believe him, his common sense warns him of the sheer impossibility of Duncan’s story. Nevertheless, the overwhelming sexual attraction both men feel for one another leads to a night of passionate lovemaking.

Even then, Darren’s logical mind refuses to accept that such a thing is possible, but when a dangerous event threatens to tear them apart, Darren must be a believer or lose Duncan forever.

If the myth is true, then Dan and Malcolm could be a pair of lovers who have been reincarnated over and over again over two thousand years. That seems impossible, but it’s hard to deny that something very strange is happening.

As Dan and Malcolm work to find the truth, they fall for each other hard. But searching for who they really are puts them both in grave danger, and they find themselves racing against time to keep their happily ever after.

Theme: Futuristic

strainIn a world with little hope and no rules, the only thing they have to lose is themselves.

Rhys Cooper is a dead man. Cut off from the world since childhood, he’s finally exposed to the lethal virus that wiped out most of the human race. Now his only hope for survival is infection by another strain that might provide immunity. But it’s sexually transmitted, and the degradation he feels at submitting to the entire squad of soldiers that rescued him eclipses any potential for pleasure—except with Darius, the squadron’s respected, capable leader.

Sergeant Darius Murrell has seen too much death and too little humanity. He’s spent a decade putting plague victims out of their misery and escorting survivors to a safe haven he can never enjoy. He’d rather help Rhys live than put him down, so when Rhys can’t reconcile himself to doing what’s necessary to survive, Darius is forced to save Rhys in spite of himself.

But with each passing day, it looks less and less likely that Rhys can be saved. And that means that Darius might soon have to put a bullet in the head of the one person in years who reminds him of what it means to be human.

Giveaway Rules

Ok, so here are the rules folks! (Are you noting the red font of seriousness here?). I know I put rules after every contest and likely no one reads them. But theme week giveaways run differently than other contests so please, please read all the boring details because I want each and every one of you to be eligible to win. So here goes…

So as you may have noticed, we have MANY prizes to award. Over 100. That is insane you guys. Given how many prizes we have to give out, we need a way to keep this all moving so it doesn’t take half a year to give them all away. So here is what I need you to do:

Read through all these awesome blurbs above and list your top 7-12 prizes in ranked order within your comment (more is better than less). If I draw your name, I will pick the first available prize from your list. If there are no prizes left on your list and your name is drawn, never fear. You will still get to pick a prize. I will contact you directly and you will have 24 hours to respond with your choice. Typically there are enough unique choices that I am able to award the majority of prizes without having to wait for the email back and forth. PLEASE remember to check your SPAM filters so your emails from me don’t get lost! Every year folks miss out because they either have messages sent to SPAM or they forget to check their email so don’t let that happen to you.

Here are the other details:

  1. Leave a comment to enter the giveaway. Prizes will be awarded in the order names are drawn through Random.org.
  2. Please include in your comment your top 7-12 prize choices, in order. I only need to know the book title.
  3. WordPress collects emails when you enter so you do not need to leave an email UNLESS you want me to contact you at a different address than you use to sign in. If that is the case, please leave it in the comments.
  4. PLEASE, PLEASE be sure to set your spam filter to accept mail from Joyfully Jay (joyfullyjay@gmail.com). Every time I do these contests I have several folks miss out on prizes because they never responded to my email and I don’t want that to happen to you. If you will be out of town, check your mail or let me know or something. Check your junk mail. Don’t miss out people!
  5. If your name is drawn I will either award you a prize from your list, or contact you to pick one. Either way, I will send you an email and YOU MUST REPLY WITHIN 24 HOURS. Even if I pick something off your list I will still need to hear back from you to confirm that you got the message before I pass your name along to the author or publisher to send you your prize. I don’t want them to be forced to track you down.
  6. You must be 18 or older to enter the contest. Sorry, adult content here folks.
  7. Don’t panic if you don’t hear from me right away. It takes a while to award all these prizes! I may contact you first or I may just pass your name along to the prize giver, just depends on how I am doing for time.

Still more fine print:

  • By entering the giveaway, you’re confirming that you are at least 18 years old.
  • Winners will be selected by random number. No purchase necessary to win. The number of eligible entries received determines the odds of winning.
  • Winners may be announced on the blog following the contest. By entering the contest you are agreeing to allow your name to be posted and promoted as the contest winner by Joyfully Jay.
  • Prizes will be distributed following the giveaway either by Joyfully Jay or the person/organization donating the prize.
  • By entering you are agreeing to hold Joyfully Jay harmless if the prize or giveaway in some way negatively impacts the winner.
  • Readers may only enter once for each contest. Duplicate entries for the same giveaway will be ignored. In the event of technical problems with the blog during the contest, every effort will be made to extend the contest deadline to allow for additional entries.
  • Void where prohibited by law.

The contest closes on Saturday, March 28th at 11:59 pm EST.

So I that’s it. If you have any questions, shoot me an email and we will talk. Good luck and enjoy!
