Excerpt

Cristian Flesh is a good cop and a smart man, but that doesn’t prevent him from doing things that cause people to label him Too Stupid To Live. But when it comes to people he cares about, and there aren’t very many, he would do just about anything.

The excerpt is a scene where Cristian’s best friend Gabe shows up at his apartment. Cristian’s actions aren’t very wise, but in this case he’s thinking with his heart, not his head.

I GOT home early and was about to start working on the massive piles of laundry when there was a knock on my door. I looked through the peephole—it was Gabe. I opened the door and could see he was upset.

“Look, man,” he started off. “I’m sorry. I know what you said about a second night and all that, but I just—”
“Come in,” I said. He stepped in, and I shut the door behind him.

He turned to me, and I saw his eye was bruised and he had a bloody lip.

“What happened, kid?” I reached out to touch his eye. He flinched, and I pulled my hand back.

“What happened?” I repeated with more emphasis.

“A guy picked me up to….” He paused.

“Picked you up for sex?”

“Yeah. He said he just wanted to suck me off. So we went to his place. He started sucking me, then said he wanted to tie me up. I told him I wasn’t into that, and he lost it. Started screaming at me and calling me a cheap slut. I told him to fuck off and grabbed my stuff to leave. He yanked my hair and punched me in the face. He got a couple more hits in before I kicked him in the nuts and took off.”

“You okay, kid?”

“Yeah, I’m fine. I think he would’ve raped me if I hadn’t gotten out of there. I saw handcuffs and whips. An assload of S and M shit.”

I was furious about what had happened to Gabe. Not just for him, but for all the other abused young men who had been abandoned by their families and left to fend for themselves. Young men who were forced to do whatever it took to survive.

I grabbed my coat but left behind my gun and my badge. “Tell me where he lives.”

“Why?”

“Just tell me.”

“I ain’t gonna tell you unless you tell me what you’re gonna do,” Gabe said.

“I’m going to pay a visit to this guy and teach him a lesson about hurting young men.”

“You serious?”

“Hell yeah, I’m serious. Now tell me.”

“How about I show you?”

“No, you need to stay here.”

“I go with you or nothing.”

“Fine. Let’s go.”

He directed me to a large house on Mountaingate Drive on the edge of the city. The guy was obviously loaded; the entrance to the house was decorated with marble statues.

I walked to the front door and knocked hard. “Stay out of sight for a minute,” I told Gabe. He ducked behind a corner.

A short, chunky man answered the door wearing a pair of sweats and a grungy T-shirt. “Who the hell are you?”

“A friend of the boy you just tried to rape.”
“What the hell are you talking about?”

I grabbed the guy by his shirt, pushed him into his house, and forced him to the floor. I sat on top of him. “You sick bastard, you think you can take whatever you want. Bastards like you deserve to die.” I heard Gabe step inside and close the front door.

I punched the guy in the gut and stood up, pulling him with me.

“You?” the guy said when he saw Gabe. “You’re behind this, you little whore.”

I slapped the guy across the face—a bitch slap. “Don’t talk to him like that.”

“Why the fuck do you care about a cheap hustler like him?”

I slapped him again, spun him around, and slammed him against the wall.

“He’s a decent young man. And you will apologize to him.”

“Fuck you,” the guy spat. “I ain’t apologizing to no one.”

I slammed him against the wall again. “You’re a lowlife piece of scum, you know that? What you choose to do in your bedroom is your business. I don’t care if you like to use handcuffs or whips or whatever. But there are plenty of guys out there who are into that kind of thing—you don’t need to force nobody into it.”

“He’s a whore. No one cares what happens to him.”

“I care,” I whispered into his ear. “I think maybe you need to be taught a lesson.”

“What’re you doing?” Gabe asked me.

“I’m gonna teach him how it feels to be the victim instead of the victimizer.”

“You’re going to pay for this,” the guy said.

“Shut the hell up,” I yelled in his ear.

With one hand pushing him against the wall, I pulled down his sweats, revealing a hairy ass. I opened my pants, pulled out my cock, and rubbed it against his ass.

“I’m gonna rape you like you were gonna do to my friend.”

“What? No, please don’t,” the guy begged. He started crying, blubbering like a baby.

I started to press myself against him, and he cried even louder.

“Please, don’t do that. Please, please, please.”

“Apologize.”

“What?” he said between sobs.

“Apologize. To. My. Friend.”

“I’m sorry, so sorry.”

“Beg for his forgiveness,” I ordered. “Grovel like the pig you are.” I threw him to the ground, and he crawled to Gabe’s feet.

“I’m sorry. I really am. Please forgive me. I won’t ever do anything like that again.”

Gabe stood there with a look of half amusement, half shock.

“You good, kid?” I asked as I zipped my pants up.

“Umm… yeah.”

“Good. Let’s go.” As I walked by the sobbing pile of blubber, I knelt down so I could whisper in his ear. “Say one of word of this to anyone, and I will be back.”

Gabe and I got in my car and drove to my place in silence.

WE WERE back in my apartment for a few minutes before Gabe said anything.

“That was freaking unbelievable, Flesh.”

“He had it coming,” I said.

“I don’t get it.”

“Get what?”

“Why you did that for me.”

“I know what it’s like to be made to do something you don’t want to do. I couldn’t let that guy get away with it.”

“I still don’t get it, but I appreciate it. What can I do to repay you?” He reached out and rubbed my crotch.

I walked away. “I didn’t do it so you’d sleep with me, kid. I wouldn’t do that. When we have sex again, it’ll be because we both want it, not out of some warped sense of gratitude.”

“I just ain’t used to people doing things for no reason,” he said.

“It happens, kid.”

“Can I ask something, Flesh?”

“No.”

“No?”

“No, I wouldn’t have raped him.”

He smiled. “That’s what I figured.”

“I might’ve killed him,” I admitted. “That’s why I left my gun here. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to hold back.”

He looked at me for a minute before I broke eye contact. “You think I can crash here? I don’t feel like going home yet.”

“Sure thing, kid. You can have the couch.”

I grabbed a pillow off my bed and two blankets from a closet and tossed them at him. He nodded his appreciation.

“G’night,” I told him as I walked into my bedroom.

“See ya.”

I was asleep a minute after my head hit the pillow.

He’s been queer his whole life, though he tried to deny it for years with a wonderful woman. The years in denial weren’t all bad, he has two amazing kids out of it. His son is a teenager and his daughter has made him a grandfather, three times over. A way too young grandfather.

Ethan has returned to Oregon after almost a decade in Nevada. He no longer has a day job and is doing his best to make a living at this writing thing. If he can’t make a living, he at least wants to support his Mt. Dew and beef jerky addictions.
