Austin glanced around the car. He was way past the point of wanting to get laid—or even having the capability of making it happen—but Beau had a comforting presence. The thought of stumbling into his condo then trying to sleep while the ghost of Vinnie tormented him had his gut churning.

“I know I’ve been a complete pain in the ass tonight, but…”

What was he thinking? He had no right. There was still enough alcohol softening his brain cells that he’d been about to push his mortification to new levels by asking Beau to stay just a few minutes more. Maybe come inside for a…

A what? A drink?

He dropped his head in his hands. He could’ve sworn he hadn’t been this pathetic when he’d gotten up that morning.

“But?”

Austin looked up. “Never mind. You’ve been really great, I mean it. Thanks again.” He opened the passenger door and promptly tumbled out onto the ground.

Fuck!

His feet scrabbled under him as he frantically tried to get up then run as far away as he could. Mexico seemed like a plan. He felt Beau embrace him with strong arms around his chest, lifting, assisting him in getting up.

“Are you okay? Come on. Let me help you.”

Austin couldn’t make eye contact. He hissed when he bent his elbow. Beau rested a large hand on Austin’s upper back, between his shoulder blades. The warmth, the promise of strength was a comfort. Beau held his arm with his other hand.

“What’s wrong? Did you hurt yourself?” Beau examined Austin’s elbow. “You banged this up pretty good. Let’s get you inside where I can get it cleaned up for you.”

“Don’t. Please. I feel like such a shitheel. You’re probably the nicest guy I’ve ever met, and I’m really thankful you helped me out, but I don’t think I can handle much more in the way of abject humiliation.”

He was stunned by how much he’d just revealed to Beau. It was outside his normal parameters of communication. The entire sentiment had been completely absent of any and all sarcasm.

“Hey. There’s nothing to be embarrassed about.“

“Oh?” He raised his eyebrows in question.

“Well, maybe a little.” Beau chuckled before turning serious again. “But not about this. Now don’t argue with me. Let’s get you inside so we can get this taken care of.”

Austin shivered. It wasn’t even slightly cold out but Beau’s tone of authority had Austin wondering if he might be capable of standing to attention after all.

“T-thanks Beau.”

“No problem. It’s this one, right?” Beau indicated to his unit, number four.

“Yeah. That’s mine.”

“Watch your first step here.”

A snarky remark bubbled below the surface, ready to jump out and alienate Beau, but Austin tamped it down. In reality, Beau could’ve rightfully said much worse. Austin hadn’t exactly proved himself to be too steady on his feet over the course of the evening. Besides, it was too wonderful to have Beau helping him up the steps, his hand at the small of Austin’s back guiding him, the other holding onto his arm.

Blurb

Justice Prevails by Morticia KnightNever judge a sexy man by his cover.

Detective Beau Williams is hard-working, dedicated, and professional. He enjoys the finer things in life, but with his heavy caseload that includes what Beau suspects is a new serial killer, he has no time to enjoy much of anything. What the tall redhead needs is someone to shake him up a little.

Investigative Technician Austin Kent never met a snarky joke he didn’t like – or a set of stairs that couldn’t trip him up. One night after a devastating episode at work, Austin sees something else he likes – the handsome detective he’s seen around the station whom he’s always wondered about. But after he makes a drunken fool of himself in front of Detective Williams, he’s sure there’s no hope.

Beau and Austin’s worlds collide right away when Austin is sent to pick up some evidence at the station. Amidst a myriad of twists and turns in the troubling serial killer style murders of Vegas conventioneers, Austin and Beau discover that there’s more to the other than they’d originally thought. There might even be more they’d like to give – unless the killer has the final say.
