Today I am so pleased to welcome Wade Kelly to Joyfully Jay. Wade Kelly has come here as part of our Beach Read Bonanza. Please join me in giving her a big welcome!
Hello… I was supposed to write a blog post with a beach theme and I forgot. Then, while I panicked and thought of what I should talk about, a song came into my head. It was that one “it’s all about the bass,” only in my head it came out: “It’s all about the beach, ’bout the beach, no desert.” And then I said out loud to no one in particular, “This is why I should never be allowed to speak.”
Weird things come out of my head. Anyone who has read my books knows this. They are only getting weirder, or wonderfuller (not sure which), as time goes on. The next few that come out starting from now forth, are born out of a desire to be ME all the time and let a little more sunshine out on the world around me. Does that mean I’ll be writing 1’s on the Wade Kelly Scale of angst? Probs not. I do seem to bring the angst into the story even when I don’t plan to. Maybe it is because Sunshine is only seen and appreciated after there’s been a hard rain.
So in the interest of keeping this “beach” related, let me talk about the beach. It’s all about the beach, you know. I love the beach, but I hate sand in my suit and waves knocking me over. I love the sound of the ocean, but I don’t like baking in the sun. I don’t tan. I burn. So being in the sun all day with no cover and waves that knock me over when I try to cool off, and gritty sand that works its way into crevices where no one appreciates, is not exactly my idea of fun. So why do I go? I like walking on the beach in the early morning when the sun is still cool and I can walk along the water’s edge and get my feet wet, just my feet, and listen to the waves breaking. I like sitting on a towel and burying my feet, wiggling them under the sand where it’s cold. I go to the beach to watch the sun rise over the ocean where I can ponder the majesty of God without the hang-ups of organized religion or people telling me what to feel or not feel about the colors in the sky that only God can make. I go to see sand crabs scurry across the sand when no one is on the beach yet, so you see the tiny claw tracks in the sand that lead up to a tiny hole where they disappear. And maybe, finally, I go so I can walk on the beach at night when you can’t see the waves, only hear them, as I walk in the thunder of that sound under the stars.
This is the reason I love the beach. Yes, I can list things I don’t like, but I think that it is better seen with my new goal in mind. If I am going to spread a little sunshine everywhere I go, then shouldn’t everything be seen from that perspective? What are the positive things? What are the sunshiny things? Let go of the downers. Let go of the black clouds. I can’t exactly do this alone, so you have to remind me of the good. Think about the good things in your life. Tell me about them! And tell me about YOUR OWN fun reasons to visit the beach.
It’s all about the beach, ’bout the beach, no desert. We can talk about the desert another day! (Except that I’ve never been to one.)
Thank you for stopping by.
I blog often on my own blog: writerwadekelly.blogspot.com
Feel free to subscribe via e-mail because then the post comes to you by the next day, no Internet surfing required.
This is a spontaneous post, but don’t be surprised if it shows up in a book somewhere. I think Grant would say some of this. IDK.
That’s all for now. Ciao! Xoxoxox

If there weren’t so many people at te beach I’d go more often. The beach at night is a great relaxant.
I was at the beach for the first time this year today, watching my 8-year old going in; she and three other brave young ones. Actually it was really nice listening to the waves and the seagulls and see the vast expanse of the beach only inhabited by a few eager sunbathers (most lay hidden away in between the dunes, out of the way from the wind). I love the beach because of the opportunities it gives you to watch the people and the environment around you.
Your comments about the beach pretty much sum up mine, though I do like looking at the waves. An hour at the beach does it for me. (Now I’ve got that song running through my head, GAH!)
I do love the beach in the morning , when nobody is still there, and at dusk in summer, when people are retiring and nature is gaining her territory back. But I also love the beach in winter, when the sea is as its bravest and most dangerous and you feel how insignificant your problems are. So humbling!
Fun post.
I love the beach at 5:30/6:00pm, when I no longer have to apply suntan lotion and can sit and read in peace!
The beach is all around us, dont go often enough but i do like a winter beach too!!
I like getting to the beach early, around 8am or so to claim a prime spot for the day of sun in the sun 🙂
Sounds like a great read! I grew up with some of the best beaches around, San Diego! GRL is going to be a blast.
I don’t visit the beach often because i’m not a sun bading woman and i got sun burn easy and sadly no tan (but maybe that’s good). But i love the beach when it’s not to hot and you can walk along the beach in peace. Thanks for this post.
I live 5 mins from the beach but I’m disabled so I have been for many years. It’s is so great when all the tourists have gone home the beach is back to being clean and tidy and then it’s time for warm clothes and long walks on the now peaceful beach.
I live in Tucson, AZ. I wished that I was even close to a beach. Right now the average temp in the day is 105 to 112. Even at 8:OO pm it can still be a 100. Way to hot for this old lady. I seat here think how the beach would be and the water would feel to me. COOLING. Help me I am too hot..
I live near a beach town, but I generally only walk on the beaches when out-of-town friends are visiting…it’s often kind of foggy and windy, and I’m afraid to turn my back on the waves. (I always admire my European friends who don’t mind swimming in the cold Pacific…I’m always standing on the sidelines, watching their stuff and cheering them on!)
I burn too if I’m not careful. I try to go out when it’s early or later in the day and miss the peak sun. I love the feel of the sane on my feet and picking shells if there are any. I love the waves burying my feet in the sand.
There are many people at the beach. It is fun.
What I love most about the beach is watching my kids play and their joy. After that, I love the sun and swimming in the waves.
Thanks for the post!
I love that the beach is all about happy people having lots of fun in the sun! Still don’t like the sand but something has to keep it from being perfect. Thanks for the post.
I don’t really like going to the beach since I don’t really do much. I’ll rather walk around the boardwalk. When I was a kid I use to love going to pick up seashells though.
I’ve only gotten to go to the beach once. In high school, yeah, not telling how long ago that was. LOL But I remember getting up early in the morning and walking and walking. Today, I’m not sure if it would be safe for a 16 year old to take off down the beach when no one knows she is gone. I loved walking with the water just licking over my feet. It’s always been a dream that I would have a special someone to walk with holding hands, watching the sunset.
I would love to be able to walk on the beach at night, or early morning too. Your description is beautiful. 🙂
Great post!
I don’t live anywhere near a beach, but vacations to the beach are always a good thing. That might be more about getting away from work and certain stressful people, but the beach is very relaxing.
I do live near a . Beach but alas a huge sand dune separates the parking area from the ocean and at another beach there is a cliff you need to climb down. I am handicapped so visiting local beaches is not possible.
I love the beach but I have to stay out of the sun so I am the pale one all covered up walking on the beach.
The beaches nearest to me are pebbled beaches and the sea is far to cold to even put a toe into 🙂 but I do like to go beach combing to find bits of semi precious stones, amber and sea glass (with sun factor 5o+ on to protect my pale skin)
The beach is an hour and a half away…and it’s my happy place…
I love walking barefoot in the wet sand with the waves lapping at my feet. It’s one of my favorite feelings!
I’ve always lived near the beach and felt guilty that I didn’t want to visit more. When everyone was talking about going to the beach for fun, what I wanted to do was explore cities. I wanted to visit London and ride the Underground. I wanted to walk around downtown San Francisco. I do still enjoy beaches in limited quantities, mostly for the beauty of the ocean’s vastness. Thanks for sharing. And I can’t quite get the lyrics out of my head right now. Thanks for that, too. 🙂
