Today I am so pleased to welcome Sean Michael to Joyfully Jay. Sean is here as part of the Coastal Magic Conference blog tour. He has come to talk to us about his release, Healing Fire. He has also brought along an excerpt and a great giveaway. Please join me in giving Sean a big welcome!

Fantasy, Paranormal and Dragons, Oh My!

Coastal Magic will be my first reader/author con and I think it’s appropriate as my first because the fantasy, sci-fi and paranormal genres are my favorites as a reader. From JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings to Piers Anthony’s Xanth series, and all the stuff in between, I’ve been an avid reader from a young age.

While I do a lot of contemporaries as a writer, I do love exploring the various fantasy and paranormal genres as well. Writing werewolves is always a growly good time, and I would love to do more Urban Fantasy where the world is ours except, you know, not.

coastal magic 16My latest paranormal love writing-wise is dragons. How much fun are they? A lot. I’ve written dragons for Cereus: Building, Flying with Dragons, and I’ve just released two new books featuring dragons – Shifter Rescue: Scales, this one has  a dragon shifter rescued from pirates and Healing Fire, featuring a world where dragons are well-known and various species of them are at war with each other.

Healing Fire started slowly for me, I had these two characters, but they weren’t together yet and they seemed reluctant to share their story with me, but at the same time insisting that I did have to write it. Then they were shy with the details, but as I wrote them, they got with the program and soon enough I had their story written.

I look forward to writing more dragons – I have some great ideas and one in particular that incorporates a dragon shifter into a contemporary setting that I’m excited about – and I look forward to meeting people at Coastal Magic. Hopefully I’ll see you there!

This excerpt is when Jules makes his first shift into his dragon form:

“Help me!” Jules stood, then crouched, desperate for air.

Lem grabbed his hands, placing their palms together. “Look at me, Jules. Look at me and let me be your anchor.”

His palms flared, and he winced, but Lem wasn’t burned. Wasn’t even singed.

“Made for you, Jules.”

“Lem.” His mouth didn’t work right, and his eyes saw everything. More than everything.

Lem roared, the sound calling to him. Jules called back, his world spinning wildly. Lem had shifted, the big dragon beautiful and calling out to him again. Light filled his eyes, and he felt as if the air displaced. Lem stepped back, and the big dragon bowed, smoke coming out of his nose.

Jules roared, the sound panicked and scared. He turned, trying to figure out why he was so close to the leaves of the trees.

The word was like a sound in his head.

He looked around, confused. *Lem?*

*Dragon Lord*

He continued to look around, then down. He was leaner than Lem, his fingers curled with wicked talons. He was not silver like his Lem. Instead, his scales were bright purple.

Lem bowed to him again and opened his great big wings. Wings.

Did he have wings? Jules tried to see.

Lem raised one clawed talon, and he could feel it moving along his back, spreading something out.
Jules gasped, the wings on his back spreading impossibly wide. An approving sound rumbled from Lem, and he flapped his magnificent wings.

Jules’ eyes went wide. That was him. Him.

Lem flapped again, encouraging him to follow. But he didn’t know how to fly.

Healing FireHealing Fire

What will it take for a dragon prince to defy his father and fly on his own?

Prince Jules, the least favorite of the Dragon King’s children, lives simply, banished to his rooms and the amazing adventures found in his books. He has never left the palace or shifted into his dragon form…he’s never done anything.

Dragon shifter Lem is assigned to Jules as the prince’s new bodyguard, and is determined to keep Jules safe from the Graithen, who killed the prince’s previous guardian. Lem grows to hate how the King hides Jules away, and longs to show him how to fly. His love for Jules also grows but it is forbidden, like so much in Jules’ life.

When the Graithen attack again, though, everything changes.

Often referred to as “Space Cowboy” and “Gangsta of Love” while still striving for the moniker of “Maurice,” Sean Michael spends the days surfing, smutting, organizing n=an immense gourd collection and fantasizing about one day retiring on a small secluded island peopled entirely by horseshoe crabs. While collecting vast amounts of vintage gay pulp novels and mood rings, Sean whiles away the hours between dropping the f-bomb and pursuing the kama sutra by channeling the long lost spirit of John Wayne and singing along with the soundtrack to “Chicago.”

A long-time writer of complicated haiku, currently Sean is attempting to learn the advanced arts of plate spinning and soap carving sex toys.

Barring any of that? Sean will stick with writing stories, thanks, and rubbing pretty bodies together to see if they spark.
