Hello all! Thank you so much for joining me for the Against the Grain blog tour, celebrating the release of the fifth THIRDS book. Today I’m going to chat a little bit about Therian youth.

When the government opened the THIRDS, they launched several programs to help Therians. In the 1980s, scientists were able to study First Gen Therians, and they discovered the necessity for Postshift Trauma Care. Shifting is very painful for Therians and takes a lot out of them. Shifting back into Human form leaves them vulnerable, weakened, and in need of immediate care and nourishment or they stand the chance of ending up in a coma, or in some severe cases dying.

Once the CDC Therian Registration Office had the information they needed, they began piecing together ways to help Therians recover from postshift trauma. This information was soon released to hospitals and medical professionals. The Human agents in the THIRDS are key to balancing out the scales of justice, but they’re also there to provide Postshift Trauma Care to their partners and fellow Therian teammates.

Not long after the new discoveries in Therian health, the THIRDS launched a program called Families with Therian Youth which provided classes and support for young Therians. A first shift is terrifying for a young Therian and those around them. It can be traumatizing and in many cases lethal. No one has been able to pinpoint exactly when a youth will shift for the first time. The majority of Therians shift once puberty hits, with very few shifting earlier than that.

When Cael first shifted, despite being prepared thanks to Families with Therian Youth, Tony was caught off guard and Dex panicked. Cael managed to claw at Dex’s leg, leaving him with a scar he still has to this day. Luckily, Tony was able to get his hands on the Therian First Shift Response Kit and the special sedative inside. Administering the sedative can be extremely difficult for parents. It can be both physically and emotionally challenging, not only to get close enough to administer the drug while their child is panicking and in possession of deadly claws and fangs, but it can also be emotionally painful to sedate their frightened child.

The classes provided by Families with Therian Youth shows the young Therians what they can expect from their feral Therian halves. Since each Therian classification is different, sessions and support groups are divided up by specific classifications. Cael and his family attended sessions for cheetah Therians. There Cael learned about his ability to run at high speeds, but only in short bursts. He learned that his tail helped him steer, especially on sharp turns, and that his claws are semi-retractable and always visible. As a cheetah Therian, he can’t roar, but he can purr, chirp, bark, growl, and make several other sounds to communicate. At the height of a chase, his body temperature will rise to 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cael and youths before him were lucky to have somewhere to turn to for information and help. Unfortunately such a program was non-existent when Ash and Sloane were youths. What they didn’t learn at the research facility, they learned from each other, or on their own. Even then, there’s still so much the world has yet to discover about Therians. Who knows what the future holds?

Blurb

Against The GrainAs the fiercest Defense Agent at the THIRDS, Destructive Delta’s Ash Keeler is foul-mouthed and foul-tempered. But his hard-lined approach always yields results, evident by his recent infiltration of the Coalition. Thanks to Ash’s skills and the help of his team, they finally put an end to the murdering extremist group for good, though not before Ash takes a bullet to save teammate Cael Maddock. As a result, Ash’s secrets start to surface, and he can no longer ignore what’s in his heart.

Cael Maddock is no stranger to heartache. As a Recon Agent for Destructive Delta, he has successfully maneuvered through the urban jungle that is New York City, picking up his own scars along the way. Yet nothing he’s ever faced has been more of a challenge than the heart of Ash Keeler, his supposedly straight teammate. Being in love isn’t the only danger he and Ash face as wounds reopen and new secrets emerge, forcing them to question old loyalties.
