Excerpt

Thanks so much, Jay, for having me back on your blog. I’m excited to share an exclusive excerpt from Battle Stations, my new science fiction story, and the second (and most likely last) book in my Alliances series, with you and your readers.

Battle Stations is the sequel to Breeding Stations, and the whole gang from the first book will make an appearance in Battle Stations too: Berit, Tom, Carson, Niyara, Fleur, Rene, and Ylkurt.

In Breeding Stations, Berit and his team encounter the Tash’Ba war beasts for the first time. The Tash’Ba’s are the human’s enemies and an alien race. The Tash’Ba combined genes of ancient Earth fossils with some of their world’s worst predators, and neither Berit nor his team is looking forward to encountering another war beast. They’ve all lost friends and comrades to those beasts. Of course, their prayers to never meet another Tash’Ba war beast go unheard. In my last guest post here, I talked about the war beasts appearing in Breeding Stations. They’re going to appear in Battle Stations as well, but there’s another addition.
Instead of listing the new creatures, how about I show it to you via an exclusive excerpt from Chapter Five:

A bang from above us had me almost spilling the content of the box on the floor. I threw another pebble aside, fished the next one out, and felt for the small elevation when the ceiling splintered with an almighty crash.

Tom jumped back. Right on time, too, because a long, pointed snout stuck through the opening. The teeth were of a frightening size, and snapped around aimlessly. Tom lifted his gun and shot a beam right into the beast’s open snout. The monster howled and withdrew. Unfortunately, only for a moment. Then it smacked its snout through the opening again, throwing its head from side to side, widening the hole in the ceiling.

“Berit!” Tom yelled. “Quick!”

“What do you all think I’m doing? Inviting those fucking things in for a tea party?” I muttered. More stones went through my hands when a nasty thought popped into my mind: What if the decoder wasn’t here?

“Hah!” Carson shouted in triumph. “Got the door locked!”

The beast with the long, pointed snout shoved its head through the opening, roaring. Even Tom gaped at it. Niyara pushed Carson as far away from the wildly moving snout as she could. I might have whimpered at the sight of the beast.

“What is that?” Carson asked in a high-pitched voice.

“I’ve never seen such a beast,” Niyara replied. She raised her gun and fired several laser beams at the beast’s eyes. It yanked its head out of the hole, hollering in pain.

Carson sank onto his knees next to me. He snatched a pebble and felt for the elevation with his right hand.

“How bad?” I asked as I put another pebble aside.

Carson shrugged. “Totally numb. At least I’m not a lefty.”

The unknown war beast pushed its snout through the hole again. His left eye dripped blood and other ghastly fluids. It didn’t roar, howl, or emit any other sound. The silence unnerved me even more.

“Got it!” Carson said.

My gaze snapped back to his face. A smile of relief showed on it. I said, “Great. Now push it and don’t let go for a minute. No matter what happens, don’t let go of the fucking decoder.”

“Wouldn’t dream of it.”

Right at that moment, the beast shoved two short but heavily muscled forearms through the hole. A moment later, its whole body crouched inside the small room.

“Okay, I might dream of it,” Carson croaked.

I hauled myself to my feet and locked my knees when they threatened to buckle. Another head—this time with two intact eyes—peeked through the hole.

“Don’t you dare,” I said.

Tom and Niyara stood ready to jump the beast, but it simply swung its head from one side to the other, sniffing the air. Golden scales shimmered on its back, and the sturdy tail slithered on the floor, the end of it twitching. The beast peeking into the hole emitted a strange clucking. The other one raised itself on tiptoes—or should that be tip-claws?—and its snout vanished outside.

“Thirty seconds,” Carson muttered.

That should be doable. I reconsidered that thought when the unknown beast lifted its snout back through the hole, a horde of mandrox sitting on it.

I didn’t need to think twice before I drew my gun and fired at anything that moved. The mandrox swarmed the room, attacking us with their sharp teeth and claws while the big beast helped, lifting more of them into the room.

Blurb

Battle Stations by Chris T. KatThe fight to eradicate the Tash’Ba breeding stations continues, with spunky Commander Berit Turner and his Nadisc mate, Tom, in the thick of things. Sometimes it seems as though they’ll never locate and destroy them all. And there’s always the fear that the Tash’Ba have something else, something worse—if that’s even possible—lurking ahead.

As if things aren’t bad enough, Berit’s less than stellar past is threatening to bite him in the ass, and they’ve received alarming new information. The Tash’Ba Queen needs to use Earth as a place to hatch the egg of her successor. And if what she says is true, the new Queen will be even more voracious and cruel than her predecessor.

Berit, along with his team—Tom, Carson, Niyara, and Fleur—must do everything in their power to stop her. If they fail, Earth will be lost forever.
