  • Excerpt: Behind the Eight Ball by M.A. Church

Today I am so pleased to welcome M.A. Church to Joyfully Jay. M.A. has come to share an exclusive excerpt from her latest release, Behind the Eight Ball. Please join me in giving her a big welcome!

Behind the Eight Ball

Hey everyone! My name is M.A. Church. Today I’ve dropped by to talk about the guys from the Fur, Fangs, and Felines. This is book #2 in the series. It’s called Behind the Eight Ball and the release date is October 30th. I’m also very proud to announce Trouble Comes in Threes won Honorable Mention in the 2015 Rainbow Awards.

Lawson ran his hands through his hair. “It’s garbage now. I guess haul it to the street and let the city take it. Might as well bag up all my clothes too. God, Heller, all I have left are the clothes on my back.”

I pulled him into my arms. “I’d say I’m sorry again, but it doesn’t seem like enough. We’re pretty much the same size. As it’s been pointed out, I do have enough clothes for two people, so you’ll have something to wear until we can get to a department store.”

MA Church paw printLawson rested his head on my shoulder. “I fucking hate this, just hate this. A lot of my stuff I’d left at home when I first moved to New York was thrown out by my parents when they found out I was dating a black man. Now it’s happened again. I’m back to having nothing.”

My heart broke at the quiver in his voice. Hugging him tightly, I searched for something to say, and I had nothing. There was no way to pretty this up or make it better. He was right. He hadn’t had much to begin with, and now he had nothing. I hugged him, and a sound somewhere between a meow and a purr escaped me. I hoped it would help calm him.

Lawson snuggled closer and sighed. “What’s that sound?”

I stopped so I could answer him. “It’s me. It’s called trilling. Werecats do it as a way to offer comfort.”

Lawson lifted his head off my shoulder and looked at me. “Oh, I like the trilling, don’t mistake me, but I was actually talking about…. Don’t you hear that?” Lawson stepped back, frowning, as he glanced down the hallway that led to the back of the house. “It almost sounds like someone knocking.”

Now that he mentioned it, I did hear something. It was like a steady pounding, not so much knocking. I couldn’t figure out what the hell it was. “I… the TV, maybe?”

“I don’t think so. There’s a commercial about cat food playing. I don’t think—”

A crash sounded down the hall.

“What the fuck was that?” Lawson demanded.

“Nothing good.”

Behind the 8 BallA cool morning, a yard full of birds, and a kitty on a mission. What more could a werecat want? Beta Heller Wirth has it all, except a mate—a shifter mate, that is. The last thing he wants is one of those dangerous humans who kill without remorse. Heller knows about that firsthand. So what does the goddess Bast do? She gives Heller exactly what he does not want—a human: business owner Lawson Dupre.

Lawson hasn’t a clue what just happened in his car detail shop. One minute a cute client is about to pass out, then he perks up and starts flirting. Next thing, he runs out the door like the hounds of hell are after him. Learning that Heller is a werecat doesn’t freak out Lawson. He happens to be one of those rare humans who knows paranormals exists. He even lives with one. Watch the fur fly as Heller and Lawson battle hurt feelings, misguided beliefs, and a power shift in Heller’s clowder.

M.A. Church is a true Southern belle who spent many years in the elementary education sector. Now she spends her days lost in fantasy worlds, arguing with hardheaded aliens on far-off planets, herding her numerous shifters, or trying to tempt her country boys away from their fishing poles. It’s a full time job, but hey, someone’s gotta do it!

When not writing, she’s exploring the latest M/M novel to hit the market, watching her beloved Steelers, or sitting glued to HGTV. That’s if she’s not on the back porch tending to the demanding wildlife around the pond in the backyard. The ducks are very outspoken. She’s married to her high school sweetheart, and they have two children.

She was a finalist in the Rainbow awards for 2013 and is a member of Romance Writers of America, Rainbow Romance Writers, and Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.
