Today I am so pleased to welcome Charlie Cochet to Joyfully Jay. Charlie has come to talk to us about her latest release, Between the Devil and the Pacific Blue. She has also brought along a great giveaway. Please join me in giving Charlie a big welcome!
Thank you all for joining me on the next stop of my blog tour celebrating the release of Between the Devil and the Pacific Blue which is out October 31st. I’d also like to thank Joyfully Jay for hosting me.
Although Between the Devil and the Pacific Blue isn’t necessarily a Halloween story, it does have certain horror elements which made it perfect for a Halloween release date. This fun little novella has a bit of everything, romance, sexy-times, humor, action, mystery, suspense, and a dash of horror.
The horror romance genre is one I have merely dipped a toe in. To be honest, it’s not a genre I’ve considered writing in before, but I had so much fun with this story that I haven’t completely dismissed the idea. Of course my version of horror is most likely pretty tame compared to other stories out there. I’m a bit of a wimp when it comes to horror. There were several instances in Jordan Castillo Price’s amazing PsyCop series where I wished I could close my eyes while simultaneously reading, as well as in Jordan L. Hawk’s Hainted. Not that closing my eyes would have done me any good, considering the vivid imagery was seared into my brain. If you haven’t read either, I highly recommend them.
I’m a sucker for paranormal romance stories with otherworldly aspects, though I can’t say the same for movies. I remember having to turn on all the lights on my way to the bathroom for several nights after watching Ju-On and the original version of The Ring. Coming from a very spiritual culture that believes in spirits and the afterlife doesn’t help in the horror movie department. Vengeful spirits and paranormal activity—not the movies—scare the heck out of me. So, no, there won’t be any checking in to haunted hotels in Louisiana for me, thank you very much. You couldn’t pay me to sleep there. You’re lucky if you can get me to take one of the tours, and there’s a good chance the slightest noise will have me feeling from the place like it was on fire.
When I was a kid I loved horror movies. Nightmare on Elm Street was one of my favorites. I watched everything from Halloween to Friday the 13th, to Poltergeist to the Exorcist. Somewhere along the way, my head decided “nope”, because when you grow up your brain starts trying to explain these things, the plausibility of it, and anything remotely related that could maybe kinda happen. I have a very active imagination. After that last trend of Japanese horror flicks, I called it a day on horror movies. Though these days there are some pretty amazing shows out there, so I might have to give those a try.
How about you? Do you enjoy a good horror movie? Do you have a particular you like or don’t like? Any particular kind that scares the pants off you?
Blurb
For the last six months, Detective James Ralston has worked the nightshift as security for the Pacific Blue Hotel, and every night at 2 a.m. his rounds lead him to the radio room where the handsome and mysterious Franklin Fairchild sits listening to waltzes as old as the hotel itself. James is drawn to Franklin, but Franklin is a man at the end of his rope, and James has no intention of getting caught up in whatever trouble Franklin is in. A heated encounter late one night sends James down a disturbing path and has him questioning everything around him, including his very sanity.

Great post, Charlie! I love horror movies/books. I remember Ju-On, the original version of The Ring, was terrifying.. Nothing to do with the decaff later version. One of my favourite horror films/books is The Shining. I watched the film first and was scared to death by Jack Nicholson wonderful performance. But some years later I read the book, and found the atmosphere of Overlook Hotel distressing and absolutely spooky. I had a terrific, frightening, completely enjoyable time reading it!
The Shining is AMAZING! In high school I went on a Stephen King reading binge and read everything I could get my hands on, though I think IT was probably the most frightening for me bookwise. The Shining was definitely scarier to me filmwise. Thank you so much for stopping by! 😀
I like horror movies when I’m not alone after viewing them 😉
But as I suffer from a really severe case of coulrophobia I definitely avoid any story involving clowns: too much to deal with… I especially like movies where the awful factor really comes from the human beings like in post-apocalyptic “28 Days Later…” by Danny Boyle and “The Road” by John Hillcoat (after the novel by Cormac McCarthy), or “The Hole” by Nick Hamm. Thanks for the chance at the giveaway.
I’m like you Charlie. I loved scary movies when I was younger but now I just can’t! I think my scariest book was Let the Right One In. The English translation of the original Swedish. The Swedish movie was terrifiing but I never watched the American remake. I have always loved vampires but there is something about that specific book that still gives me chills.
I have never been a fan of the slasher-type horror movies. But, I do love paranormal stories – mostly books. The scariest thing I remember was some documentary my dad was watching about a serial killer. I was about 6 or 7 and was supposed to be in bed. But the way the house was angled, I could see the TV from my bedroom window and I watched the show from there. Big mistake! Some re-enactments were included and they gave me nightmares for years.
I only meant to read the first chapter and be done, did that happen of course not – got all hot and bothered and had to go and preorder. Can’t wait to get my hands on this. You sure are a tricky one Charlie…
I’ve never really watched horror movies only when I was a teenager and they used to scare me so much. I do remember one that was about a hand that came to life and went about killing everyone in this big old house and I can still remember how much it scared me! Congratulations on your upcoming release I have it pre-ordered of course.
I’ve never cared for being scared, so I’d join you in fleeing from weird sounds in a haunted hotel. That said, an intriguing ghost story sounds appealing.
Similar to you, I watched horror movies when I was younger etc. But now, I really don’t like horror/macabre/slasher movies etc. I do like to watch paranormal shows or movies with horror aspects. Your story sounds very interesting.
I’m not a big horror movie fan but i do enjoy a good horror book. My favorite author in that genre is John Saul.
Thanks for this post and the giveaway chance 🙂
I’m pretty wimpy, though I saw WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS in the theatre and was stunned at how much I loved it. Of course, it’s technically a comedy, though it does have its scary moments (though they were telegraphed enough that I could turn my head away, like when the vamps started putting down newspapers pre-bite). Plus, I love the FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS guys anyway, and Jemaine Clement was shockingly hot as Vladislav the vampire!
I Am not fond of horror movies but my kids all are.
I’m not a fan of horror movies at all, but back in the 80’s I bet I saw Poltergeist at least a hundred times.
After a while it just seemed funny, but not at first. 🙂
Just a couple of hours more and this will be released, yay! I can0t wait. 😉
Can’t wait to read this! Love Charlie’s books!!!
The Shining still scares me, along with Salem’s Lot and the original Fog.
I was the opposite of you when I was a kid, lol. I was scared senseless at watching Nightmare on Elm Street. Heck, Sixth Sense scared me just as badly. I can stomach more scary stuff now.
I watched a lot of horror movies as a kid. Most didn’t bother me. As I got older, it was fun to make fun of them especially when they use way more blood than a body can hold, etc. Thanks for the giveaway chance and the great post.
I love scary movies. I remember watching horror films on Saturday nights after the news with my father much to my mother’s chagrin 🙂 I prefer suspense more so than slasher these days.
I occasionally enjoy a horror movie, but for the most part I avoid them. Especially zombie movies. It’s the idea of dying by being eaten alive. I just… No. I end up lying in bed at night trying hard not to think about it; and we all know how well that works.
I hardly ever watch anything anymore and although, like you, I used to love watching horror movies. Not so much now, though. Your novella sounds quite good, and horror is not something I’d say no to in a book, especially an M/M book which is all I read nowadays.
Congratulations and much success!
This sounds like a really interesting read! I’m going to go read the sample as we speak.
