First, I want to thank Jay for allowing me to visit today. This is the home stretch of the blog tour and the last guest post of the tour. It’s fitting, because Jay was one of the first people in the genre to reach out and offer me help. Not just, okay sure I can host you, but she answered questions and helped me navigate my way.  So I’m glad to have this chance to ‘wrap things up,’ on Joyfully Jay’s Blog.

I’ll talk a bit about the book in a minute, but I wanted to use this space to say, ‘thank you’ to the community as a whole. I feel very fortunate to be a part of the genre. The people I’ve met, on line, in person or both, have been some of the kindest, most generous people I know. I may not be a best selling author, but the friendships I’ve made far outweigh any sales.

So why the bit of sentimentalism?  As I write this, it’s release day and I think it was a great day. Friends wished me well, shared the posts to let their fans know about the book, and helped me get through the grind that surrounds the release of a new book. I’m pretty blown away by the help and support. Everyone is busy, we all are, so it really hit home the generous spirit of our community. Sales are nice, wonderful even, but the people are what make this such a great place. Thank you all.

Purpose. Right, my book. This is a book blog after all.  William Morgan is the host to a spirit. The Spirit of Vengeance. He avenges the innocents killed by the guilty. It’s the kind of ‘job’ that can play havoc on your psyche. To avoid dealing with what he’s become, he hides behind a made up persona. He buries his emotions, and ignores most of what he’s doing so as to not hold himself accountable for his actions. Hell, it’s the spirit that makes him do it, so why should he take responsibility.

One night, he saves an innocent man instead of avenging him after the fact. Ryan, the young man he saves, returns the favor and helps Will reevaluate his actions and how he accomplishes his goals. More than any other gift Ryan could give, this one helps restore the one thing Will can’t get back on his own. His humanity.

That is the major theme of the book, and it is premised on the fact that good people can achieve great things just be being themselves. It wasn’t money or power or influence that will save Will, but rather something everyone has if they choose to spend it, kindness. So simple, yet sometimes it’s so hard to find.

I won’t say I wrote Purpose as a metaphor for the MM community, because I didn’t. But subconsciously I believe in the good in people and that feeling was in my mind when I wrote the book. Our community happens to be very good at helping each other and that theme is well covered in the works that populate our genre. I need look no further than how people treat me to see it on display every day.  Thank you all and I hope you enjoy, Purpose.

Purpose2nd Edition

Forty years ago the Spirit of Vengeance—a Purpose—took William Morgan as its host, demanding he avenge the innocent by killing the guilty. Since then Will has retreated behind Gar, a façade he uses to avoid dealing with what he’s become. Cold, impassive, and devoid of emotion, Gar goes about his life alone—until his tidy, orderly world is upended when he meets Ryan, a broken young man cast out by his family. Spurred to action for reasons he can’t understand, Gar saves Ryan from death and finds himself confronted by his humanity.

Spending time with Ryan helps Will claw out from under Gar’s shadow. He recognizes Ryan is the key to his reclaiming his humanity and facing his past. As Will struggles to control the Purpose, Ryan challenges him to rethink everything he knew about himself and the spirit that possesses him. In the process, he pushes Will to do something he hasn’t done in decades: care.

Bio

Andrew Q. GordonAndrew Q. Gordon wrote his first story back when yellow legal pads, ball point pens were common and a Smith Corona correctable typewriter was considered high tech. Adapting to the times, he now writes with a shiny new MacBook that he sets on the same desk as his manual typewriter and vintage adding machine.

Long a fan of super heroes, wizards and sports, Andrew’s works include high fantasy, paranormal spirits, magic as well as contemporary fiction. He is still trying to find the perfect story that will include all his favorites under one cover.

He currently lives in the Washington, D.C. area with his husband, their young daughter and dog.  In addition to dodging some very self-important D.C. ‘insiders’, Andrew uses his commute to catch up on his reading. When not working or writing, he enjoys soccer, high fantasy, baseball and occasionally sleeping.
