I read Until Forever Comes in ebook format a couple of years ago and it is one of my favorites from Cardeno C. I’ll refer you to my original review for a more detailed summary of the story and my feelings about it, but I will say that I love the vampire/shifter pairing and the relationship dynamic between Ethan and Miguel. Ethan stars out this book sickly and an outcast, and I love how he comes into his own with Miguel. He is smaller and weaker than his mate, but Ethan is feisty. I love how he knows Miguel is meant for him and willing to do whatever it takes, even uprooting his life, to be with him. And of course the gruff, aggressive vampire with the sweet, young virgin is a theme that never gets old for me. I also enjoy the way this story takes a look at shifters from a different angle and shows how the vampires are actually much better at interacting with humans than the more anti-social shifters.
I will say, I didn’t love this one quite as much the second time around and I am not sure why. Maybe it was the audio format, or maybe I had built it up too much in my memory. But still, this remains one of my favorite books by this author and one I always recommend.
The audiobook is narrative by Charlie David, one of my favorite narrators. I think he does a great job overall with the story. The story takes place in the south, so there are a lot of accents to deal with and I think for the most part they are handled well. I think he does a particularly nice job with Crissy, Ethan’s sister. And Miguel has a nice Spanish sounding accent. I wasn’t as wild about Ethan’s for whatever reason and found it had a bit of a whine to it, but I am impressed with how clearly and consistently David was able to maintain the accents throughout the story. The pacing and tone and sound quality on the recording are all good. I didn’t particularly like the kind of tribal transition music between chapters, but nothing really offensive. And seriously, I feel kind of pervy saying this, but David does amazing sex scenes. He gets that breathy intensity, the moaning and groaning, all so well and lifelike. It is really excellently done.
So overall I continue to really like this book and thought it was great in audio. I would definitely recommend it in either format.
