Rook Takes A Pawn

The video played on a loop. This young man had something driving him, something in his background that fed a need to be the best. Another head shot, taken from three hundred yards away. The target dropped like a lead balloon. Another frame, another kill. The shooter couldn’t be called anything other than gifted. And I knew who I wanted for my team.

“Rook, we’ve always supported you on any decision you’ve made. But are you certain about this one? He’s arrogant, and has a history of infractions since he started basic training. Doesn’t play well with others, either. There are many better candidates to choose from.”

“I want him,” I told them. “Call it gut instinct, but I think he could be one of the best operatives we’ve got.”

“At least look at his files, okay? Find out what you’re getting in for with this one.”

I said I would, but it was hardly necessary. I’d studied this man closely since he’d been brought to my attention. He defined maverick. You give him a job, then stand back and let him do it. Don’t try to rein him in, or worse, give him restrictions, because he’d do whatever he deemed necessary to take his target out.

The kid’s background was a total mess. Sister institutionalized, mother out of the picture, abandoning him at sixteen. What a piece of work she was. No father listed on his birth certificate. So we knew he was alone in the world. Nothing tying him to the military either. I slid the pictures of one Arnold Moore, deceased. Killed by the very kid he’d abused. Poetic.

I glanced up at the clock. I’d given them thirty minutes, and I considered that more than enough time. I connected to headquarters and got Malloy online.

“I want him,” I said brusquely. There would be no beating about the bush. This kid would be the best, and his talent had been squandered in the military. He’d be a lot more valuable to us.

“Rook, think about this,” Malloy warned. “Why are you so dead set on this kid?”

“Because I’ve got a list of dead and missing kids,” I shouted. “Because no one gives a fuck about them. You guys sit in your offices worrying about some bullshit while kids like—while kids die. We can’t do this. They need someone to watch over them, too.”

Malloy was quiet for a few moments. “I understand. I’m sorry. I should have realized—“

I cut him off. “It’s fine. This kid? I want him. He’s going to be part of my group.”

“Okay, I’ll have him pulled, but know this: He’s your responsibility. If he makes a mess, it all falls on your shoulders.”

“Fine. Yes, he’ll be mine to clean up after. I get it. But I don’t think it’s going to come to that. He’s going to give me exactly what I need, because I know what demons are haunting him.”

“Okay. I’ll have him picked up next Monday and taken to the facility. Do you have a codename for him?”

I thought for a moment before I answered. “Yes. And it’s perfect. He’ll bring the children home and keep them safe. He’ll be their Haven.”

Malloy murmured his agreement and disconnected. I turned back to the camera as a bullet ripped through the back of a tribal warlord. Where everyone else had smiles a mile wide, my guy’s mouth was set into a grim line. He took no joy in his job, but he did it well. He would be perfect for my needs.

“I’ll see you soon, Haven.”
