After a date gone bad, Jake is just looking to head home. He wasn’t expecting to bump into the one who broke his heart. Sixteen years ago, Henry broke Jake’s heart when he denied his love for him and took off with a woman. Now Henry is back, divorced, out of the closet, and asking Jake for a do-over.
While this book is a prequel to Twice the Hands to Hold, it can easily be read as a standalone (though I do recommend reading the first story, just because it is so good!). This is a wonderful second chance at love story. For those of you who have read Twice the Hands To Hold, you will remember that Jake disclosed to the twins that he and Henry had dated back in high school. In this very short read, readers finally get the back story behind Jake’s relationship with Henry, Brian’s coach. While ordinarily I am not a fan of flashbacks, in this case it made perfect sense to get Jake’s perspective of what had happened all those years ago, mixed with the present day conundrum of whether he should give Henry the second chance he wants.
Though the book may be short, the sex scenes are plentiful! These two have chemistry – whether it is back when they are teenagers or today as adults!
As a fan of books that are interconnected with one another, my one complaint about this story is that it never tells us specifically when all of this occurs – which happens to be about a month before Twice the Hands to Hold starts – and doesn’t really make any attempt to tie in how it all relates to the bigger story. Yes, the blurb on the back of the book tells us, but honestly, who really reads those? I would have liked to have seen it stated right at the beginning or maybe have seen a prologue where Jake introduces Brian’s coach as his old high school boyfriend and then gone into this book.
Overall, I thought this was a wonderful story that really answered some of the questions I had about Jake and his story that weren’t covered in the first book. I will admit I was a bit disappointed that it was so short, but it is packed with details that really shine a light on who Jake is and how he got to be where he is. If you loved the first story, you’ve got to read this! Highly recommend.
