Dear Reader,

Here are a few things I’d like you to know about my novel Mute Witness.

1. It’s hard to classify. The publisher shelves it under “Mystery & Suspense” and yes, it has elements of both within its pages. But it’s also a love story about how a loving couple stays a loving couple in the face of horrible adversity. And…it’s also social commentary about prejudice, gay rights, hatred and bigotry. And…if you read all the way through, you’ll find there is a bit of the supernatural, when one of the characters gets his hellish just reward.
2. It has a basis in fact. No, I didn’t go through the horror of having my child abducted or abused. Thankfully, that’s a pain I can only imagine. But like Sean, the father in Mute Witness, I do know what it’s like to fear never seeing your child again, just because you’re gay. Back in the early 90s, when I was going through my divorce, I faced the possibility of not having visitation with my six-year-old, solely because of my sexual orientation.
3. It has a happy ending. Yes, you have to wade through some mighty dark waters to get there, but I like to think you’ll find the ending not only happy, but redemptive. I like to think that the book is testimony to the power of love.
4. It’s one of my darkest books. But see #3 above. I truly believe you’ll find it’s a journey from darkness to light—and that the trip will be worthwhile.
5. It’s a second edition. MLR Press originally published the book a few years ago. When DSP Publications picked it up, they worked with me to extensively revise, correct, and all-in-all make it a much better book.

Mute_Witness_Final2nd Edition

The abuse of a little boy turns a community against a loving gay couple, and nobody comes out of it unscathed.

Sean and Austin have the perfect life: new love, a riverfront home, security. Their love for one another is only multiplied when Sean’s eight-year-old son, Jason, visits on the weekends.

And then their perfect world shatters.

Jason goes missing.

When the boy turns up days later, he’s been so horribly abused he’s lost the power to speak. Immediately small town minds turn to the boy’s gay father and his lover as the likely culprits. What was a warm, welcoming community becomes a lynching party out for blood.

As Sean and Austin struggle to stay together amidst innuendo, the very real threat of Sean losing the son he loves emerges. Yet the true villain is much closer to home, intent on ensuring the boy’s muteness is permanent.

1st Edition published by ManLove Romance Press, 2009.
