Today I am so pleased to welcome Lex Chase and Bru Baker to Joyfully Jay. Lex and Bru have come to talk to us about their new joint release, Some Assembly Required (which I reviewed here and loved). They have also brought along a great giveaway. Please join me in giving Lex and Bru a big welcome!
Hello, everyone! I’m Lex Chase and I want to thank Jay having me here today as a part of the Some Assembly Required blog tour! What is Some Assembly Required, you ask? It’s a fluffy meet-cute I had co-written with Bru Baker about two dead guys who meet in the afterlife in CASA, a big box affordable home furnishing store, which happens to be purgatory. And you say, “Where has this been all my life!” I know, I know, all of our lives have been incredibly empty, and Bru and I intend to remedy that.
As we wrap things up on this tour, I could say my life has been a little empty until Bru came into it. We had met on Twitter by chance, did word sprints together, met in passing a couple times at GRL. We seemed to click really well. Or at the very least, she wasn’t a serial killer. And then she was my roomie with Charlie Cochet and I at the Dreamspinner Press Workshop last March.
And then it happened. The honest to god true story of how Some Assembly Required came to be was Damon Suede was leading a seminar on love scenes. He happens to comment offhand “Put a sex scene in an IKEA!” That night, in our hotel room, Bru and I had a full fledged pitch. And in 30 minutes before pitching while waiting in line, Bru furiously wrote a synopsis. The Powers That Be said “GIVE ME THIS.” And we said “OKAY.” And thus…a new co-writing duo was born.
So. Bru and I decided we want to share with you a glimpse into our madness when it comes to working together. So presenting, a lovely line of our bizarre 100% real texts. You can’t stage this with a text generator!
First: I had to do intense research about Chris Pratt, who as I mentioned before on this tour was our inspiration for Patrick. Who’s the alpha? You’re the alpha. Yessir!
Second: How Bru And Lex Brainstorm
Third: How Bru and Lex plot another series.
Fourth: How Bru comes up with an AWESOME story and Lex is The Worst.
Fifth: Because we all need to be reminded in the case of bad days.
Sixth: In which, Lex’s synopses are fucking brilliant. You know it.
Seventh: Last, but not least, Bru and Lex are contractually bound for all eternity. Couldn’t think of a better weirdo to spend it with.
So, to top off our tour and the last day of the giveaway, we have a question! If you had to spend all eternity with someone, who would it be? What would you do?
Tell us down below and don’t forget to record your answer in the giveaway widget!

Everyone wishes they were dead when wandering the purgatory of a home furnishings store, but these guys actually are.
Benji Goss is the quintessential good guy. When his boyfriend dumps him and moves out, Benji obligingly keeps the cat—even though he’s allergic—because his ex’s new place doesn’t accept pets. He’s always joked the cat would be the death of him, but not in a way he expects when a feline mishap crushes him under a DEL TORO bookcase.
Snarky loner Patrick Bryant is in such a rut he barely remembers the life he used to lead. The last thing he recalls is being decapitated by a DEL TORO bookcase in a freak accident. As a spiritual CASA resident, he haunts the aisles of affordable Italian furniture, assisting fellow spirits in moving on to their final destinations.
When Benji appears in the CASA café, Patrick considers the naïve spirit just the man to cure his boredom. Benji’s relentless optimism chips away at Patrick’s sarcasm, making him question if there’s something beyond what he can see. But the heart is like CASA furniture—there’s always some assembly required.
About the Authors
Lex Chase once heard Stephen King say in a commercial, “We’re all going to die, I’m just trying to make it a little more interesting.” Now she’s on a mission to make the world a hell of a lot more interesting.
Weaving tales of sweeping cinematic adventure—depending on how she feels that day—Lex sprinkles in high-speed chases, shower scenes, and more explosions than a Hollywood blockbuster. Her pride is in telling stories of men who kiss as much as they kick ass. If you’re going to march into the depths of hell, it better be beside the one you love.
Lex is a pop culture diva, her DVR is constantly backlogged, and she unapologetically loved the ending of Lost. She wouldn’t last five minutes without technology in the event of the apocalypse and has nightmares about refusing to leave her cats behind.

Bru Baker got her first taste of life as a writer at the tender age of four when she started publishing a weekly newspaper for her family. What they called nosiness she called a nose for news, and no one was surprised when she ended up with degrees in journalism and political science and started a career in journalism.
Bru spent fifteen years writing for newspapers before making the jump to fiction. She now works in reference and readers’ advisory in a Midwestern library, though she still finds it hard to believe someone’s willing to pay her to talk about books all day. Most evenings you can find her curled up with a mug of tea, some fuzzy socks, and a book or her laptop. Whether it’s creating her own characters or getting caught up in someone else’s, there’s no denying that Bru is happiest when she’s engrossed in a story. She and her husband have two children, which means a lot of her books get written from the sidelines of various sports practices.

Thanks for your post — especially the author exchanges — and the giveaway. I’m eager to read Some Assembly Required; it sounds like a fun read.
Who would I spend eternity with? Hmm. My daughter asked if the Internet was an option. I’ll vote for my husband. I’d probably spend eternity reading … and eating chocolate!
I hope you check it out Kareni! <3
Man if the Internet was an option, I'd totally take the Internet too. So many cat videos! So little time!
Great post, this sounds like a fun read! I’d have to say my fiancé, I really like him 😉
Thanks Jenn! Daaaaaw! And I bet he likes you too. Is he your “otter half?” 😀
LOL – those texts were so fun!
I would spend eternity with my husband and we would travel (interspersed with lots of reading for me).
Thanks Jen! There was more. There’s ALWAYS more. We’re like a greatest hits album.
Thanks for the great post. I enjoyed reading the exchanges. I think I may never fly Aer LIngus.
Thanks Debra! I’m with you. Aer Lingus seems like a….delightful airline. Um. No. D:
I think an eternity with anyone would get on my last nerve. I would love to see my husband again But, yikes even a dearly loved one!! That’s not to mention that I am no darling angel either.
Hahaha! Well that’s why they call it compromising! 😀
Good question. No sure who it would be since I don’t have a SO. Premise of your book sounds intriguing.
Thanks! Well you could spend it with a pet, a celebrity, a historical figure, anyone! 😀
I’d spend eternity with my true love!
Daaaaaaw. How sweet Trix. <3 <3
I have no idea who I’d want to spend eternity with, but could it be someone who’s hot & is great in bed? That would be really fantastic, thanks!
Works for me! How’s Chris Evans for you? He seems to be the one everyone goes for. 😀
I could spend eternity with my mom. We get along fabulously.
Aaaaaaaaw! I get along pretty fabulously with my mom too!
Hmmm, eternity with? Well, I think I could spend it with my Mom too 🙂
Hurray for Moms! <3
LOL. Thanks for sharing that with us =) Who to spend eternity to with? Probably my family, even though they drive me a little crazy.
You brave, brave soul! LOL
Honestly, I do not think I could spend all eternity with someone… I get easily bored with relationships… My bad!
No worries here! You’d be the awesome loner! <3
I don’t know who I would want to spend eternity with. I think probably with my family.
That’s sweet! A family that stays together….stays for all eternity together!
My best friend. We would read books, watch TV, Movies, Animes and listen to our favorite bands. We happen to have the same taste in all of those things. I guess it’s not a surprise we’re best friends.
Aaaaaaw! Awesome Kc!
I don’t know who I would spend eternity with, thruth be told, I don’t have anyone I love to spend that much time with. 😛
How about a cat? I could spend eternity with cats. <3
