Cy is unceremoniously dumped by his boyfriend, Alex. Cy is convinced that this is because of his own asexuality and, feeling in a low mood, he discovers a box of his late mother’s belongings; inside is a grimoire. Little realizing that he has magic in his bloodline, Cy thinks it will be fun to try the spell to summon his true love, hoping that Alex will appear. Before he knows it, there is a naked stranger in his room, covered in soap suds!

Dig is just as surprised by Cy by this accidental summoning, although he has grown up as part of a magical family. When he realises that Cy is unaware of his power and that he is actually in danger, Dig decides to take Cy to safety…via Dig’s motel room states over.

How Not to Summon Your True Love is the story of Dig and Cy’s road trip. The dangers they face are not life-threatening, but the element of mystery keeps the reader entertained and helps Miller to reveal more about the magic community, whilst developing the friendship between Dig and Cy.

I really enjoyed Miller’s storytelling, particularly because the story is so character-centered. Dig and Cy are opposite personalities, but their relationship is not forced.

How Not to Summon Your True Love is the first book I have read with an asexual character and I wondered if Miller might attempt to compensate for this is in some way. She doesn’t, and thankfully her characters’ values are not compromised in any way.

This is not a story that takes itself too seriously and I think because of that it will be enjoyed by many readers, particularly those seeking representation for a sexual orientation not commonly explored in popular gay fiction.
