Today I am so pleased to welcome Devon Rhodes to Joyfully Jay. Devon has come to talk to us about her latest release, Naughty By Night. She has also brought along an excerpt and a great giveaway. Please join me in giving Devon a big welcome!

RTs, Sleepwalking and Throuples

I just got back from RT—where I got to spend a lot of time with Joyfully Jay’s fearless leader, woo hoo!—and hit the ground running as I usually do, including doing a lot of updates for my latest release, Naughty By Night. I’m not sure why I always seem to have release dates that coincide with trips, but hey, I’ll take it!

It was actually during last year’s RT in Dallas that I met my first real life threesome, or as their friends called them, a throuple. There are probably a disproportionate number of romances that have threesomes or menages when you compare the percentage to the number that exist in real life, but I know there are some out there. Plus—it’s romance. Real life statistics aren’t necessary! All you need is a little bit of imagination to picture three people who fit together in ways that complete a relationship just as well as two people might.

The throuple I met in Dallas weren’t attending RT—they live in Dallas and I met them when I escaped the convention hotel one night through friends of a friend. We sat around a table with some drinks and chatted, and it was interesting watching the dynamics. One of them was very touchy-feely with both of the other two. Another of them seemed to be the spokesman for the group—he was always the first to speak at any question or break in the conversation. The youngest of the three was the hardest to get a read on, but he spent the most time talking to other people—going off but always coming back. The first guy would reel him in when he did, then he’d be off again.

Later last year I got the rights back on a very short MMM story that had been in an anthology many years ago. It was one that I had a lot of fun writing because one of the characters sleepwalks, and I based his late night rambling on my own. When I was in college and my 20s, I was at the peak of my sleep disorders—insomnia and sleepwalking. Thankfully, now that I’m older I don’t sleepwalk much anymore—either that or I don’t realize it since I don’t (to my knowledge) leave the house. But back then I would walk outside, and sometimes into my neighbors’ apartment, so have intimate knowledge of how that felt, to wake up and realize, oh crap, I did it again.

I decided to take that short story and put the characters into my Grad School Guys series world, so I added over 24,000 words to the original short story scene, showing how the three men met and interacted on their way to the climactic moment—then more afterwards to show how they all reacted to the big change in how they saw each other.

I won’t give anything away, but just remember that when you’re reading the sleepwalking scenes in Naughty By Night, you have a pretty intimate insight into my past!

I’d love to give away a copy of the first book in my Grad School Guys series, Remarkable Restraint, to a couple of commenters! Just leave a name, email and what format you’d like along with anything else you’d like to say, and I’ll draw some winners next week. Meanwhile, here is an exclusive excerpt for Naughty By Night.

Excerpt

It was nice and cozy when he woke and the urge to pee wasn’t too bad, so Marty buried his head into the pillow and tried to go back to sleep. Something was niggling at him, though. Did he have something to do before work? An assignment for one of his night classes?

It soon became clear that he wasn’t going to be able to drift back off, so he turned over with his arm out to feel for his phone to check the time and his calendar for the day.

But instead of hitting his side table, he ended his roll against a warm body with his arm over…Kevin. Who was grinning like a maniac.

“Oh my God.” He froze and darted his gaze around. Blue sheets, wrong room. Wrong apartment.

“I know! And you thought it wouldn’t work. For a while last night, I was thinking maybe you were just faking it to trick me, but no. You were totally out of it. Just crawled into bed and went back to sleep. It was so cool.”

The whole time Kevin was chattering, Marty was becoming increasingly aware that he was naked and in Kevin’s bed, practically lying on top of the man. And apparently that was way too much for his man-brain to handle, because while he hadn’t woken up with morning wood, he was sure sporting some now. At least there were some bunched-up covers between his cock and Kevin’s hip. How the hell was he going to get out of this without completely embarrassing himself?

“Did you know you talk in your sleep?”

Just when he’d thought it couldn’t get any worse. He tried to create some space but Kevin had slid his arm around Marty’s waist like he woke up with a man who hadn’t been there the night before in his bed every day. “Um, no. Did I say any—? I mean, what did I—?”

“You said, ‘Special J’. At first I thought you meant Special K, like the cereal—like you were hungry in your sleep or something. But you repeated it insistently when I asked.”

“Weird.” Maybe he’d been having lunch with Jason in his dream—he always got the special, so it was the only thing he could think of that made sense. Though he supposed that talking in one’s sleep usually didn’t make sense.

“I’m so glad we did this.” Kevin gave him a hard hug that almost dislodged his protection of covers.

It was only natural that he turn his head to brush a light kiss on Kevin’s temple, then they were cuddled close together, just like a couple or something. The warmth of Kevin’s skin against his own did nothing to help his burgeoning problem. He tried to sit up, but Kevin wouldn’t let him.

“Let’s celebrate,” Kevin murmured in his ear. Marty wasn’t the smartest guy in the world, but the intent there was unmistakable. And could he really turn this opportunity down?

Blurb

naughtybynight_800Normally, finding the hot neighbor in bed with your boyfriend would be the end—not the beginning—of a wonderful relationship.

Marty can’t catch a break. Unable to confess to his neighbor Kevin that it’s Kevin he’s interested in, he ends up using advice to make a move on Jason instead. He moves too slowly, though, and Kevin and Jason end up dating each other, leaving Marty out in the cold.

Everything changes the morning Jason wakes up to find Marty in bed with him and Kevin. Jason wonders whether he’s made a big mistake in committing to Kevin. Marty’s mortified—he’s wanted Jason from afar for ages, but never had the courage to act on it. And Kevin is plotting something naughty that will give all three men what they’ve wanted all along.
