Today I am so pleased to welcome Elizabeth Varlet to Joyfully Jay. Elizabeth has come to talk to us about her latest release, Fierce & Fabulous (which I reviewed here and really enjoyed). She has also brought along a giveaway for her tour. Please join me in giving her a big welcome!
Thank you so much for having me here at Joyfully Jay. Today I’m going to talk about setting.
Setting is such a huge part in any story, especially if it is an iconic location. New York City helps give the Sassy Boyz series its edge. Throughout Fierce & Fabulous we see glimpses of the city through the eyes of my main characters and come to know it as they do.
Take, for instance, West Village, where The Vibe, the club where the Sassy Boyz dance, is located. Fitch sees this neighborhood completely differently that Ansel does. For Ansel, West Village is a haven. It is home. From the bustling streets to the boutiques, Ansel enjoys the low-key atmosphere and the bohemian-ness of the neighborhood. Even the historic Stonewall Inn is located in West Village so he can connect to that part of gay history by being there.
Fitch is from New Jersey so he has another perspective of city life. For him, NYC is too crowded and expensive. He doesn’t see the appeal. He much prefers the laid back quiet lifestyle of Bayonne.
But we can also see Ansel enjoying nature as he contemplates life while sitting on a rock in Central Park. Or when they enjoy pizza on their first official date together in Midtown.
In Dark & Dazzling, book two in the Sassy Boyz series, I focus on East Harlem because both main characters live in the neighborhood. It’s a much darker version of the city. This has to do with the nature of the story but also because the neighborhood itself is riddled with gang violence and has a reputation for being dangerous.
I try to be as accurate as possible when writing scenes that feature a particular setting because I understand how important it is to get these details correct. However, I’ve been known to make mistakes and locals will, no doubt, have little trouble finding them. Google and library books can only do so much and sometimes even NYC native beta readers don’t catch everything.
That’s why I want to reach out to readers and ask for their help. If you see a setting detail in my stories that doesn’t ring true please send me an email. I may not be able to fix it immediately, but I can certainly keep it in mind for the next book I write.
Fans of Heidi Cullinan will devour this scorching new male/male series by Elizabeth Varlet. Behind the Sassy Boyz’s seductive smiles and sinful dance moves are desires that will leave readers breathless.
Fitch Donovan never thought a lap dance could change his life, but from the moment the gorgeous dancer’s lips touch his, his world comes screeching to a halt. No matter how hard he tries, he can’t shake the desire that rocks him to his core. He’s longed for this passion all his life—he just never dreamed he’d find it with another man.
Sharing a soul-shaking kiss with a straight boy is the kind of drama Ansel Becke just doesn’t need. Spotlights aren’t made for two and Ansel prefers to keep things on a one-night-only basis. So when Fitch shows up asking for an encore, Ansel knows he should send his gorgeous ass packing.
Though Ansel tries to pretend that what’s between him and Fitch is far from fabulous, there’s something about the big, burly contractor that makes Ansel’s world sparkle in a way no amount of glitter ever could. And Fitch will do whatever it takes to convince Ansel that when the thing you need most in the world falls right into your lap, you’d be a fool to let it go.
Elizabeth Varlet is a nerd at heart and spends way too many hours binging on episodes of her favorite television shows. If you love Doctor Who, Supernatural, Stargate, Star Trek, Sherlock, or Firefly you are already her best friend.
She started writing stories in high school and hasn’t stopped. Now, her characters like to get frisky under the covers – or the stars, they’re not picky. She’s a thirty-something, newly married, world traveler who devours books like they were candy.
