Summer in Georgia

In Snakes Among Sweet Flowers, I attempted to portray a hot Georgia summer for my readers. It’s an experience that is more than just the heat and humidity, although those leave a stamp all their own. Sweat dripping down the back of your neck, running into your eyes, and sticking your clothes to your body. The only help for it is a big glass of iced tea and a cool breeze rustling through the trees. Maybe a dip in the lake too, if you can.

Snakes Square ImageMy summers as a child were filled with visits to my grandmother’s, playing all day in the swimming pool and staying up in the evenings to catch lightning bugs on the front porch—with a healthy spraying of mosquito repellent, of course. That oily coating is part of most every memory of summer I have, that or pink calamine lotion to ease the bites when I forgot. I remember spending days trying to build a raft down by the creek. I imagined floating off on adventures, although I never did get anything that would stay afloat with me aboard, but not for lack of trying. I wore tube socks on my hands and up my arms to pick blackberries so my grandmother could make a cobbler to take to her church’s ice cream social or just for dessert after a big meal of homemade fried chicken and pole beans I helped snap. We went to her tiny church on Sundays where we sat in the un-air-conditioned auditorium and sang old-timey hymns while waving a funeral home fan to stay cool. The town’s library was up on the main street, and I could walk there from her house. I went most every day I was there and checked out books to read while lying under her bed in the heat of the day or when we crawled in bed at night.

As a kid, those summers seemed endless, both in length and in possibility. The heat and humidity seemed to slow life down and I was as tanned as a gingerbread boy by the time school began in the fall. I hope I expressed even a portion of the wonder of it in my writing.

Blurb

Snakes Among Sweet FlowersTwo-time ex-con Camden Sanders has decided that Hog Mountain—an isolated community on the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia—is the perfect place to continue running small scams without the threat of more prison time. But there are a few problems with this plan. One is the neighborly citizens of Hog Mountain thwarting his dirty dealings at every turn with their kindness. Another is Jackson Rhodes, a closeted Hog Mountain police officer who can see right through Cam’s good ol’ boy act and plans to catch him red-handed despite the attraction they both can feel. But the biggest problem of all is that Cam’s past is threatening to catch up with him, and it could mean trouble for more than just himself.

Bio

Jason Huffman-BlackJason Huffman-Black could be described as the porn star alter ego of the mild-mannered editor for several LGBT publishers. By day, Jason edits and writes in a cozy chair, while Mr. Huffman-Black travels the globe on such adventurous excursions as wrestling the one-eyed spitting serpent of Tangiers, ass-spelunking into the hidden tomb of King CockTut, and most recently, sharing a prison cell in a small third-world nation with a rather sweaty fur-covered hulk of a man named Javier.
