Today I am so pleased to welcome Lex Chase back to Joyfully Jay. Lex has come to talk to us about her latest release, Urban Fairy Tale. She has also brought along a great giveaway. Please join me in giving Lex a big welcome!

Hello, everyone! I’m Lex Chase and a huge thanks for Jay letting me pop in to talk about my new release Urban Fairy Tale!

Urban Fairy Tale is a long-awaited finale to the Screw-up Princess and Skillful Huntsman Trilogy. Telling the grand adventure of fuck-up dude Princess Taylor Hatfield in his true love jackass, redneck Huntsman Corentin Devereaux, they thanklessly save Enchants from threats such as Taylor’s own brother, Atticus.

Taylor, Corentin, and Atticus have been through a lot. A. Lot. This series is just as much as Taylor’s origin as a hero as it is Atticus’s origin as a villain.

I knew the series was going to turn into a tale about brother against brother from the get-go. I also knew the final scene of Urban Fairy Tale while writing the first book Americana Fairy Tale.

However, it was Corentin who provided the vehicle to keep the books tied together.

Like all fairy tale stories, every character has a curse. A weakness they strive to overcome. Taylor is Sleeping Beauty, but price for his magic is to be a perpetual insomniac. Corentin’s curse to lose his memory every seven days. From his name, to what he is, to his life with Taylor. Every seven days, Taylor makes them fall in love all over again. Sometimes successfully, and sometimes not so much.

The large arc focused on the task and a goal. You’d be surprised at the task was stopping Atticus, and the goal was breaking Corentin’s curse.

Atticus provided an obstacle, motivated by his jealousy for his brother. Truthfully, Atticus’s reasons to lash out at Taylor were incredibly flimsy. But Atticus’s reasons have been twisted to the point of terrifying obsession. His deteriorating mental state is one of my favorite things to explore. Much of his symptomology mimics my own with growing up with bipolar disorder. And a lot of his moments hit very close to home. He’s a man in such deep psychosis, he wants to get well, but is going about it the wrong way.

Taylor’s trapped with wanting to save his brother, and wanting to save the man he loves. Taylor’s arc is twofold. With Corentin, he just wants him to be happy. He goes through whatever is necessary to take care of him. Even to the point of willingly offering to sacrifice his life in the previous book Bayou Fairy Tale.

Taylor’s sibling bond with Atticus runs deep. Taylor has done everything in his power to vilify himself to protect his brother from their controlling father. When Taylor is disowned by his father, Taylor over time sees it as a blessing so his brother can be taken care of. Atticus sees it as Taylor abandoned him, Taylor is forced to realize he had been selfish. And now their relationship is become so toxic, the only way out is for one of them to die.

But even when faced with the impossible, Taylor has to do the unthinkable.

He can save the man he loves, or he could bring his brother back to his senses.

He can’t have both.

And here we have Urban Fairy Tale.

Urban Fairy Tale

Modern day fairy-tale princess, Taylor Hatfield, has problems. One, he’s a guy. Two, he’s an insomniac Sleeping Beauty. Three, his practically perfect brother, Atticus Hatfield, this generation’s Snow White, has been irrevocably corrupted by the Witchking. The Library, a clandestine organization, seeks to write “The End” on Atticus, and Taylor faces the impossible when his own parents endorse his brother’s demise. With his true love, the huntsman Corentin Devereaux at his side, they once again set out to find Atticus, but Atticus won’t go down without a fight.

The quest ends how it began. But instead of the quirky, corkscrewing Americana road trip, Taylor and Corentin must contend with the dangers of the urban jungle. With an unexpected ally at their side, they’re forced to question all they knew about the legacy of Snow White.

As the world of the Enchants and the mundane hang in the balance, Taylor knows what he must do…. Go pick an apple.

Bio

Lex Chase once heard Stephen King say in a commercial, “We’re all going to die, I’m just trying to make it a little more interesting.” Now she’s on a mission to make the world a hell of a lot more interesting.

Weaving tales of sweeping cinematic adventure—depending on how she feels that day—Lex sprinkles in high-speed chases, shower scenes, and more explosions than a Hollywood blockbuster. Her pride is in telling stories of men who kiss as much as they kick ass. If you’re going to march into the depths of hell, it better be beside the one you love.

Lex is a pop culture diva, her DVR is constantly backlogged, she has intense emotions about Hannibal’s Hannigram, and she unapologetically loved the ending of Lost. She wouldn’t last five minutes without technology in the event of the apocalypse and has nightmares about refusing to leave her cats behind.
