My Writing Process

Am I a plotter or a pantser? Well, a bit of both really, although I lean more towards pantsing. I start with a rough idea for a story, or sometimes quite a detailed one. With Regeneration, for example, I pictured various events in my head as if I was seeing them taking place: such as Kim’s encounters in the galley with Novak; their escape from the planet of Pardus, and their crash landing onto S.K.100 (another planet). I’ll make notes on the important scenes for the book in the order I want them to occur, then work on my characters. My second MC, Christian Novak, was in my head as soon as I thought of the story, in glorious detail from his big muscled build, to his melting chocolate eyes and tough-guy behaviour. Kim Fortune developed a little slower in my mind. Once I know who my MCs are, I handwrite in an old-fashioned notebook, their names, ages, occupations and backgrounds, and start adding details about families (if they have any). Kim and Christian have no family as they were created in a laboratory. But other side characters feature in the story, so these get a few lines of description in my notebook. Once I have my basic outline and my characters, I simply plunge in and write. I follow the outline I have mapped out, but the characters often tell me where they want to go, and I hammer the keyboard to get their story down. Each time something of note happens, or something extra is revealed about one of the characters, I add it to the notebook. There’s nothing worse than a new character being described with blond hair and blue eyes, and later in the story they have green eyes, because you forgot what they looked like. The notebook saves me having to reread endless pages of story to find what I wrote several chapters ago. Each writing session I start, I’ll read over the last few hundred words I wrote to get back into my characters’ world, and off I go. Once done, I self-edit repeatedly before I send to betas, pre-readers, publishers, or whatever. I’m a bit of a grammar and spelling Nazi when it comes to my own work, and when I’ve checked and tweaked a dozen times, I read the whole thing out loud, because I find this is a great way to pick up mistakes. If every word has to be spoken, it quickly highlights where you used an uncommon word 90 times in your MS, or used one word five times in the same couple of paragraphs, or whatever. One of my betas (you know who you are, xx), pointed out once that I used the word “belly” about a hundred times in one story, which was pretty hilarious. So that’s about it. I follow this plan for everything I write. The only story that’s a bit different, is a WIP called The Power of Will. It’s a paranormal romance I’ve been working on for ages, and I’ve done a lot of plotting on it. Which is probably why I’ve been trying to write it for about 18 months. It doesn’t seem to want to go the way I planned. Maybe I should scrap the plot and let Tyler and Will, my characters, tell me where they want to go!

Blurb

Regeneration-Book-Cover-Revision-400-x-600In the 23rd Century in the galaxy of Sigma Kappa, Kim Fortune was the first surviving experimental enhanced human—a regenerate. Aged 15, he escaped the lab and years later, his failings as a regenerate and the suspicion of regular humans, leave him lonely and lacking in self-worth. Stranded on an abandoned planet, the arrival of a stricken ship and its crew give him hope that he may finally find what he always longed for—love. Christian Novak is a successful regenerate with all the intended attributes—including lack of human emotion. Despite their immediate attraction to each other, Kim’s failing confidence, and Christian’s inability to empathize are a recipe for disaster. But war, imprisonment, and danger throw them together, and after each saves the other’s life, their feelings begin to change. Can a seemingly unsuitable pair ever find love, or is a future together destined to fail?

Bio

Louise-Lyons-logoLouise Lyons comes from a family of writers. Her mother has a number of poems published in poetry anthologies, her aunt wrote poems for the church, and her grandmother sparked her inspiration with tales of fantasy. Louise first ventured into writing short stories at the grand old age of eight, mostly about little girls and ponies. She branched into romance in her teens, and MM romance a few years later, but none of her work saw the light of day until she discovered FanFiction in her late twenties. Posting stories based on some of her favourite movies, provoked a surprisingly positive response from readers. This gave Louise the confidence to submit some of her work to publishers, and made her take her writing “hobby” more seriously. Louise lives in the UK, about an hour north of London, with a mad dog called Casper, and a collection of tropical fish and tarantulas. She works in the insurance industry by day, and spends every spare minute writing. She is a keen horse-rider, and loves to run long-distance. Some of her best writing inspiration comes to her, when her feet are pounding the open road. She often races home afterward, and grabs pen and paper to make notes. Louise has always been a bit of a tomboy, and one of her other great loves is cars and motorcycles. Her car and bike are her pride and job, and she loves to exhibit the car at shows, and take off for long days out on the bike, with no one for company but herself. Social Media
