Lark and Zain have wanted each other for years, but both have held back moving forward with their relationship. Lark is a minstrel in Forest’s End, but he also has the ability to see spirits and to help them move on to the afterlife. Zain is a thief and an assassin. There are lost souls all around him, something that is too upsetting for Lark. Not to mention that Zain’s job is both dangerous and on the wrong side of the law. For his part, Zain wants Lark badly, but he wants to wait until he makes enough money to give the man everything he could ever want, and until then he can not give up his work.

The two men have been circling one another for a while, and finally decide they are ready to be together. Through some helpful magic the spirits no longer follow Zain. And even better, he is willing to give up his work and move on from those dark pursuits. Lark is thrilled to finally have the man he has been wanting forever. The men finally have a chance to be together, and it is as wonderful as they both imagined. Now they can begin creating a future together.

However, dark forces at work threaten the happiness they are beginning to build. Someone wants to use Lark’s abilities for evil purposes, and he threatens everyone Lark loves, including Zain. Now the couple, along with their friends, must figure out how to fight against the man that threatens their lives, their happiness, and the souls of many who deserve peace.

Song of Souls is the third book in S.J. Frost’s excellent Terra series. I really enjoyed the first two books, and I am not quite sure why it took me so long to get around to reading this one, especially since I had been eagerly awaiting Lark and Zain’s story throughout the series. But I am really glad I finally sat down with this one because I totally loved it and enjoyed revisiting both this couple and this wonderful fantasy world Frost has created. Terra is an alternate world that lives in a parallel with Earth. It is full of magic and dragons and knights and all kinds of interesting fantasy layers. What is unique is that at times the guys cross over to Earth and so we see them experiencing both realms in creative ways.

Lark and Zain have been a couple we have been following for a while. We have known they are meant for one another from the first book, but they seemed to face almost insurmountable obstacles to being together. I like how Frost let their relationship slowly bloom throughout the first two books, so we had a chance to feel that pining and angst, but by the time we get here to their own story, we are not made to wait long before we see them together. These guys are just as sexy and romantic together as you might imagine, and I loved how tender and sweet the bad boy Zain is with Lark. We get a nice chance to really appreciate these men as a couple and see how happily in love they are.

The second part of the story moves into the real adventure as the guys face an evil necromancer who seeks to use Lark’s gifts to do harm. I don’t want to get into too much detail here because this all plays out in interesting ways and unexpected directions. I really liked that we get to see Lark’s strength and his determination here, as well as how he and Zain work together. Even better, the whole gang is back in this story and as the danger ramps up and the adventure unfolds, we get to spend time with all of them as they work to fight the necromancer. It is still Zain and Lark’s story, but it reunites us with this close knit group who have been a part of the series. I liked how we get to see both the bonds of friendship, as well as romance here. And the adventure is thrilling and allows us a chance to get to see some new aspects of the world Frost has created.

So I was really excited about this third installment in the Terra series and am glad I finally got a chance to read this one. I am not sure if this is the end of the series, as it completes the romances for our original main characters. However, there is one more of their gang who still hasn’t had his story and I am hoping we get one more book featuring the elf who is missing his lost lover.

If you are fans of fantasy stories, this series is definitely one not to be missed. I have really enjoyed all three books and think Frost has created a really interesting world in Terra. I definitely recommend the book and the series.
