Length: Short Story

Sam, the Jamison Pack’s omega, has spent the last two nights at work. He tells Rusty, his Alpha, and the rest of the pack he’s working on something. In the past, Sam has spent nights on the couch in his office while these major projects are taking shape. Rusty has grown concerned for Sam (and more than a little impatient), and he takes it upon himself to head to Sam’s office and bring him home where he belongs.

While the men talk about what’s going on, Rusty actually manages to get through and figure out what is really bothering Sam, and Sam realizes work may be important, but the most important thing is taking care of himself and his pack. When Rusty brings Sam home, he is embraced by all the other pack members and given a proper welcome home.

I enjoyed this little story. As you all know by now, I like this entire Protection of the Pack series. The characters all click together and with me. They’re genuine guys who belong together. They share a deep friendship and love for each other. Sam is my favorite. He’s smart and funny and he takes his position as the pack omega to heart. An omega’s place is to bring the pack together, take care of them, and be the center of a very special bond between the pack members.

Sam begins to feel afraid of this duty and love because, for him, nothing good has ever lasted. He didn’t get to stay in any one foster home past three months and this is how long the pack has been together. It is why he finds himself staying away. What if this all turns bad? Maybe their bond isn’t really that strong? His insecurity begins to take its toll on him and the others. I found myself feeling so sad for him. I can’t imagine what it must feel like to distrust everything in my life. It must be horrible, and I’m only married to one man…not taking care of four of them.

I thought Rusty was perfect here. He loves Sam so much. However he is the pack Alpha, after all. He takes a firm hand, but he makes sure to show Sam how important he is. He’s tender as well as tough, and he makes Sam feel special and secure.

As always, Dessa Lux writes very hot love scenes. Here, we have Rusty and Sam, and at the end, Sam and the whole pack. It was all extremely sexy and satisfying.

This is a nice addition to the series. It is a short story, so there really isn’t a whole lot going on. It does give the reader a good idea of what life in the pack is like. As I’ve said before, you really need to start at the beginning of the series, The Omega’s Bodyguard, and work your way through. This way, you’ll get to know who’s who and what started it all. It’s worth it.

Fans of shifters, packs, the a/b/o universe, and lots of great smexytimes…this one’s for you.
