Length: Short Story

Armand has been looking out the window at his new neighbor. Every night, he sees the man lying on his back in the yard and is curious as to why. When they finally get to meet, the man introduces himself as Ben and invites Armand to come and see what he’s doing every night.

Ben loves to look at the stars and contemplate what might be out there in the universe. Soon, Armand is coming over every night and they begin to develop a good friendship. Armand wants more, but Ben just got out of a long relationship and doesn’t want to jump into anything right away. However, one evening, while sharing a very interesting experience, things heat up between them. What will the future hold?

I really, really enjoyed this little story. I was completely captivated by Armand and Ben. Their personalities complemented each other perfectly. I got the impression they were a little older and had lived a bit. The friendship they developed was a sweet one, and there was zero angst…just two men talking and getting to know each other.

The story isn’t long, but there is a nice build up to the men finally getting together. Ben has a particular interest, and Armand is skeptical in the beginning, but he keeps an open mind and becomes interested as well. The height of the story is so unique, and I was so impressed. Mansfield took an idea that I’ve never seen before and turned it into something sweet, funny, and just the right amount of sexy. I don’t want to give it away, though, because I think you should read to fully enjoy.

Just a quick note about the word “sexy.” There is no sex in The Sky at Night, and that was fine. What we do get is some sweet dialogue, and a moment that carries the promise of passion. It actually gave me a chill because it was perfect for this story.

I highly recommend The Sky at Night. It was a wonderful way to spend 20 minutes, and I’ll definitely read it again.
